Heat Pad
« on: May 08, 2010, 07:48:06 PM »
My new born puppies seem to have decided that it is better to sleep under the heat pad, rather than on it, no matter where I place the pad and how many times I bring them out and lie them on top of it again.

The central heating is on and the room thermometer is showing a constant 71 degrees F so it's not as if the room is cold.

The heat pad only has one, low setting, but even then with all the puppies under it, the heat pad gets pretty cosy. I am assuming that if the puppies get too hot, they will crawl out to a cooler part of the box, and that they can't come to any harm doing this, but does anyone have any experience of this\/

No experience of it as the heat pads I used were the hard kind that they can't get under.

It may be that if it is a soft pad, their crawling around puts them under it; maybe it flips up when they crawl so they can't get on top   :dunno: I'd keep an eye on the situation and put my hand under it to check the heat. A low setting is assuming that it is being used under someone, rather than the someones being under it  :005:

If it seems to be a problem maybe you could fasten it to the floor of the whelping box

I've only used the hard one's too, which are placed underneath the fleece, so the puppies can't actually get to the heatpad.

Personally, i would be concerned if they are going under your heatpad....could you not put some fleece over the heatpad to stop them doing this.  :-\

I use the human heat pads and put them under the vet bedding on middle heat, pups can't get underneath and they are always nice and warm.
