Alternative to Hills id ?
« on: March 10, 2010, 09:01:56 PM »
Hi

I recently took on a 10 month old Cocker Spaniel, who's now (1 year old)

I've had a few problems as he was badly treated, but the biggest problem is his diet

He suffered from very loose stools and wind, (when i got him he was on RC Junior 32, but it just didn't agree with him?)

after some advice from my vet he was put on Hills Prescription Diet "id" (for gastrointestinal disorders) in tins/wet.

which was fine for a few weeks and solved the problem but at £25 per week, it's just not a long  term option, we tried slowly introducing James Wellbeloved Ocean white fish and Rice Kibble, but after it got to about 75% the problem returned

So we were told to try "Chappie" in tins, but again after 75% we are starting to get the same problems return

Has anybody got any ideas of an alternative? or way of finding out what it is in the foods that sets him off?

Thanks for reading my post, and any advice

Welcome to COL, sorry to hear you've been having a few problems.

We have Baja who has been on Hills d/d or a few months and we have managed to switch him over gradually to Healthy Paws, which is brown rice and rabbit.

He currently has half HP and half d/d but will be put on Healthy Paws completely over the next few months.

Baja had problems after having a bad run of Giardia, so we found many foods just went striahgt through him, the Healthy Paws has firmed him up and left him in a much better way. In actual fact he is better now we have Healthy paws mixed in than when he was just on hills!

We found www.mybowwow.co.uk was the cheapest place to buy hills from, I don't know how much your vet is charging you but it could be worth a look.

Healthy Paws have a great website and are very good at sending some samples if you want to give it a try.

Hope this helps  :D

Roly had loose stools as a puppy when on Burns puppy - moved to JWB junior (fish variety) and he was fine, but when we moved him onto the adult JWB the same problem returned.  He's now on Arden Grange and haven't looked back.  I do limit his treats as sometimes this can upset his tummy, but would say that for 99% of the time he is fine.  We pay about £26 for 15kg for the lamb and rice which lasts my 3 dogs about 4 weeks.

Hi Welcome

Our youngest cocker Sam had the same thing with his digestion and was always having loose stools.

We tried him with various other kinds JWB included.   But like your wee soul after about 75% he
started again.
Our vet advised us trying Hills Science Plan.   We did and it did!!!   He has been on it now for
the last couple of months, and he coming on great.  At 7 months he is bigger than Holly and up for
anything!! >:D

We pay £29.99 from our vets for a 12 kg bag and it lasts approximately 4-5 weeks.  We have
even put Holly onto it.

Hope this helps.

Hi, my dog (not cocker) was prescribed Hills ID by the vet and was ok for a while but started having loose poos halfway through the second 1kg bag.  I changed to Arden Grange Sensitive - Ocean White Fish & Potato.  No more loose poos, but still windy unfortunately (she was poorly and on lots of drugs tho)
