« on: March 31, 2010, 02:42:28 PM »
A lad that lives close to me has asked can i stud my dog with his. Both as k/c registered and to be honest im quiet reluctant to do this. The main reason is i dont want to change his behaviour as he is very placid. But my main concern is the bitch is too young this lad insist's his vet's told him it's ok. But im sure she's under 2 year old.
am i right in saying no.

If you don't want to use your dog as a stud then the simple answer is no regardless of age. You also need to think about whether either dog has had the necessarry health tests to ensure that neither the bitch or your dog could pass on any hereditary diseases.

If you haven't done so please read this - http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=3420.0

Especially this:
# Managing the Stud Dog. Once a dog is used at stud, it is not unusual for his personality to alter to some extent. Some have a tendency to mark their territory indoors (cocking legs on furniture etc) and may be more likely to wander off the lead in search of in season bitches. Once a dog has been allowed to mate one bitch, they will generally want others! Some may also become more aggressive to other male dogs (due to sexual competitiveness). The potential stud dog owner needs to decide whether they can cope with these possible behavioural changes.

If you don't want to do it but find it difficult saying no, tell him your dog has breeding restrictions on it as do all the other pups in that litter applied by their breeder and so he can't be used.

Good thinking Karen  :D My neighbour approached me the once to ask me about this, she was feeling very pressured by a friend who wanted to use her boy dog at stud 'because he had nice markings' (not knowing anything about his temperament, health status etc).  >:( She stood her ground and said no about using him, especially as she has young children and didn't want his temperament to change. (Not to mention there being soooo many of that particular breed in rescue centres etc).
