Over excercising puppy?
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:52:52 PM »
Hi,

I have 2 cockers whom I try to walk 3 miles in the morning and 3 miles in the afternoon ~ about 50 minutes for each walk.

I am getting a new cocker pup in a few weeks. They say over exercising a pup is not good and there's a general rule that a pup should only be walked 5 minutes for every month (of age). So that would mean a 4 month pup should only be walked for 20 minutes.

So that means I'll have to wait till my pup is 10 months old before I can take her on one of our daily 3 mile walks. So by sticking to that rule does that mean I'll have to wait till she is 12 months before I can take her on our daily two 3 mile walks? Or would her bone structure be strong enough earlier that that? If so when?

Thanks.

In short yes, 5 mins for every month is a good thing to do and do wait until the pup is a year before it does as much as the adult dogs.

It's not much of a sacrifice on the grand scale of having a healthy active dog all it's life. Longer walks are ok very occasionally but not on a regular basis. Plus you will need some individual time with your pup to concentrate on training anyway so it does work out well when you think about it like that. :D

Your pup wouldn't be able to do a 50 min walk on a regular basis until it was 10 months old.

You can do 2-3 walks of the appropriate length a day, so once it can join in on one 50 minute walk, it would be able to do both....  ;)

That doesnt mean you cant carry your pup for part of the walk. 20 mins on the ground and then a rest and maybe 10 mins at the very end shouldnt be a problem. Carrying them does wonders for your arm muscles  :005:

Also bare in mind that you can be out for longer than that providing your pup rests. Ive taken to stopping half way round and leading my pup and getting her to settle down with a chew toy while i do retevial training with my oldest dog. She not damamging her joints but is shattered by the time I get home as shes had the mental stimulation of watching the world go by.

It does take alot of forward planning with 2 dogs of different ages but a bit of thought and its not too disruptive.
