I think Fraser killed a bird 0_o
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:19:15 PM »
He was foraging about in the dense foliage at the bottom of my garden and didn't come when called, just stuck his head up to look at me and then went back to what he was doing. Called again, same thing. Started to walk away pretending I was going in the house, but still no follow. So, I went down to where he was and he came toward me carrying a limp bird about the size of an American robin (thrush sized) in his mouth, looking for all the world like a calendar gun dog. After reading the macabre, but hilarious thread on the dog that dug up a dead cat and wouldn't let it go, I thought, I'll never get that bird out of Fraser's mouth. Unexpectedly though, he traded the corpse for a treat. I lifted it on a garden trowel for a closer look and it was definitely a recent death and still had fresh blood on its breast feather (RIP poor little thing). I assumed he'd picked up an already dead bird and it wasn't until later the CSI penny dropped -- fresh corpse, red blood-that it occurred to me, maybe he'd killed it. Whoahh! I thought cockers were supposed to leave the killing to the humans and restrict themselves to retrieval services. My sweet little murderous pup, innocence gone.  :'(

Roxy wouldn't know what to do with a bird if it hopped over to her and pecked her on the nose  :005:

However my mums rescue cocker Lucy has caught a pigeon from the sky in their garden before!! She wasn't interested once it was dead though!

Wow, bringing down flying pigeons. That's ambitious and very athletic. This morning, there he was, snuffling away at the bottom of the garden. Second bird, same species. This one had been dead for a while though not stiff, but it's (turn away those of you who are squeamish) it's, eyes were gone. I think it must have died the same time as the other one. Maybe Fraser didn't do it, though if it was a wild creature, why wasn't the bird eaten? He might be my sweet innocent after all, though when he's upside down in my lap and his big white canines are on display, I'm reminded that inside this silly, happy pup is a wolf.
