Problem with puppy lead training
« on: June 12, 2010, 05:43:02 PM »
I have had Charley off lead since I have had her with the gradual introduction to the lead for a few seconds at a time. She won't have it at all. She jumps up and bites me or the lead and tries to start a tug of war game with me, which I just ignore for as long as possible. She doesn't seem to be improving at all and am very aware that it won't be long before she starts heel work for gundog training. I have had 1 session 1-2-1 with my trainer and she was as good as gold. One day she might walk for a minute on the lead wellbehaved and I think were getting somewhere then the next time it's 1 second. This has been going on for a few weeks now so needs sorting sooner rather than later.

Any advice would be appreciated.

She is now 4 1/2 months old, and a little star off lead!

will she hold anything in her mouth whilst you walk? I had this with a pup the other week, I was tearing my hair out until I gave the pup a wrapped up pigs ear in some old cloth, which worked a treat.

Can she do heel work off lead? is it possiable for you to teach it off lead and add the lead later? That ways you can be working towards her gun dog training whilest workin on the lead tollerance seperately.

I know someone who constantly soaks her leads and  harnesses in the bitter apple anti chew stuff to keep her pup off.  :005:

Thanks for your responses guys.

Mark - more info on that method would be great. How long do you do it for each time? Do you presumably remove it when you take them off lead? I guess your's didn't drop it to try and unwrap it...etc
