Gel or lotion to prevent plaque build up
« on: June 13, 2011, 12:52:04 PM »
Has anyone had any success with oral gel to prevent plaque build up or the stuff you add to the drinking water for the same purpose? I've tried Plaque Off, that seaweed powdery stuff you sprinkle on food with no great success

Petzlife Spray is very good,as long as you use it, you can also get the Gel.

Not cheap but does work.  Have a scout about the net for the cheapest. Think it might be on ebay too.

I like Logic gel which I just use in the same way as toothpaste (although it can just be applied to the back teeth with no need for brushing). There is one called Maxiguard Oral gel which has had great feedback - I only briefly tried it as the dog hated it  :005:  Haven't tried any of the newer products for drinking water as I tried one years ago and the dog wouldn't go near the water bowl  :lol2:

My friends just tried the Petzlife gel on her cocker and can't get over how quickly she's seen results.  It is expensive but lasts a reasonable time.

I use the Petzlife Oral Gel with my four and I'm beginning to think that it really depends on the dog.  Its worked really well with both Lexi and Ellie, and to an extent quite well for Roly (his teeth are relatively clean), but not much change for Misha who was the main one that I wanted to improve.   I did use Plaque Off for a while but didn't notice much change.

For Lexi and Ellie I brush their teeth an hour after applying the gel and you can see it being brushed off - For Roly & Misha their teeth seem to be stained rather than having a plaque build up.

I have noticed that their teeth have become more discoloured since going part raw, despite having plenty of bones and chicken wings  >:(

Those who use petzlife, do you use the spray or the gel? I can't see mine putting up with the spray....

I'm beginning to think that it really depends on the dog.

yes I think you could be right,  I have been using the petzlife gel on 2 of mine ( the others all have sparkling teeth) since mid march, whilst I think the dental health and hygiene has obviously improved certainly Heidi has one large tooth at the back that the plaque just will not move however the gum line is not decayed/red so as I say think it definately helps with the bacteria.-   the dogs did not mind having the gel applied despite imo quite a strong peppermint smell

I had almost finished the gel and recently purchased the spray (courtesy of Jenny(Jaspersmum)) to try,  again no bother with the application just 3 -4 sprays in the mouth,  again the peppermint smell quite strong but cant be that bad as all the others try to lick it off and makes them sneeze :005:

tbh, i am not expecting the spray to remove heidis plaque any more than the gel,  I have a feeling she is not using that part of her mouth to eat/chew so less likely to remove the plaque

Mine all enjoyed logic toothpaste being applied but I found it a bit of a nightmare as whilst brushing all the others were trying to get their turn

I know that Petzlife carries working in the mouth after application which is why it recommends not feeding either side to allow it to do it's job.

We use the gel - I just apply it with my finger and then an hour later brush their teeth.

Yes mine are the same, they all queue up to get their teeth brushed - or try to lick the gel off while I'm trying to apply to another dog  :lol2:

Plaque can only be removed by mechanical means, you can use all the gels in the world but they won't work.
Brushing and chewing will remove some but cleaning the interdental spaces (that we use floss for) is difficult.
Discolouration or staining are not a problem only aesthetic.
There will be variation in dogs teeth depending on their genes and diet.

I've just been reading all your comments about this petzlife gel, and am thinking about trying it. Ive used the plaque off on my 6 year old female for several months and i cant say it made any difference. Is this something a vet had recommended or something you guys had come across and decided to use?

My friends dog doesn't like brushing either so she applies the gel using a piece of cloth or her finger   ;)

I saw it recommended on a forum, might of been this one not sure.

I bought both the spray and the gel. I find the spray easier, just a couple of squirts does the trick.
