Surgery!!!
« on: June 13, 2011, 11:49:59 AM »
We had Solo spayed 3 mths ago.. she was supposed to have a small hernia fixed at the same time
but during the stress of having her spayed I forgot to remind the vet( it was a different vet to the one who had previously
examined her) so can anybody tell me how long I should leave it before booking her in to be operated on again or does it really need to be done at all, it is about the size of a malteser and I don't think it bothers her..

If its only the size of a malteser and isn't causing discomfort and can be easily pushed back in or it is not showing any signs of getting any bigger I'd be inclined to leave it alone. If in the future she requires any further surgery then maybe just maybe that could be sorted out too. Just be on the safe side though, when you next take her to the vets say for her yearly injections just see what the vet suggests but I really doubt for a protrusion so small that they would consider surgery for that alone.

We had a pup born years ago that had a hernia, we were told if it DIDN'T move then it was fine to be left as it had closed and was probably just a fatty lump.  If it moved, or could be pushed in then it would have to be operated on, but no immediate danger, and recommended having it sorted out when the pup was around 12 weeks old.  The new owners took the pup home, knowing about the hernia,  when the pup was just 10 weeks, running around part of the bowel pushed through the hole, luckily her owner was home and rushed her to the vet, she was operated on immediately, part of her bowel was bruised but nothing worse which it could have been had it not been noticed immediately.

When she took the pup home, her own vet agreed with my vets diagnosis that there was no immediate danger, it was around the size of a malteser too, the morning it popped out it was around the size of a golf ball.

She had the op and has been absolutely fine since, she's now coming up 8 years old.

I had a kitten with a hernia. The vet told us that as long as it could be pushed back in it would be fine. She had it sorted when she was spayed.
