Is this the same as pro-kolin?
« on: January 01, 2012, 10:26:16 PM »
Our little Dylan has been sick since early Saturday morning (hasnt eaten since Friday lunchtime) and its been 22 hours since the last time he was sick (yes, we were welcoming in the new year clearing up after him :luv: poor boy!).

I tried to give him chicken and rice about 4 hours ago, but he's not touched it. Thankfully he does drink bits, but it has to be fresh water - and brought to him!! He hasnt been out for a poo or a pee though since I beleive Saturday morning (could be even before then as everytime he goes out he just eats grass to make himself sick so I cant confirm when he last actually relieved himself that end!)

The last time he was liked this (although that time he had diarrhea too), we took him to the vets and was given an injection and some pro-kolin, told not to walk him until he's better, and to give him just plain food... so I'm doing exactly the same this time (if he's not any better soon, he will be going back to the vets when they're open again - I seem to have a dog that ALWAYS gets sick at weekends or on bank holidays!) ...either way though, what my real question is, is this the same as pro-kolin:

I just feel like I should be getting something 'good' into him if he's not going to try eat himself, as its worrying he hasnt eaten in over 2 days!!

What do you think?

I've also seen this:

but I doubt Dylan would take a tablet - could it possibly help too though?

Sending healing vibes to your pupster. I think if it were me (and I am always over cautious) I would take him to the vet. If he is having sickness but not runs the other end it could be a blockage. I dont want to worry you but I would get him checked over by the vet. Do you know if he had eaten something he shouldnt?

Willow during her puppyhood always had a dodgy tum on and off and the vet said it was colitis. For that reason I now keep in a tube of pro kolin. I dont know re whether the other medicines are like pro kolin but for me pro kolin is magic treatment.

I would try and get some fluids in to him. Could you put a teaspoon of tuna in water and see if he drinks that.

I hope he is better soon, keep us posted.

I know its bank hol, but do you have an emergency line you could ring for advice? Our Willow was passing blood one bank holiday and I called them they gave me advice over the phone and I took her the following day when they told me not to worry, i then took her the following day when the vet was open.

She had sickness and the runs one night and I took her out of hours. The cost was double the price of the usual consultation but for me was worth it for peace of mind  :D

As I understand it Pro Kolin is an probiotic and is taken in conjunction with food. TBH if he hasn't eaten since friday I would be taking him to vets as I found usually when my dogs haven't wanted to eat it was usually a bit more than upset tummy. Hope he picks up soon  :luv:

Holly Berry is right. your pup should be at the vets. Neither of those seem to be like pro-kolin but you can buy it on the net at a fraction of the cost.

I'd be inclined to phone the vet as he's not eaten since Friday and hasn't pooped either. Hopefully it's just some sort of tummy bug but the symptoms could indicate a blockage.

I'll go have a look on their website.

I cant think of anything he could have eaten to block him. He can be a little b***** though, so I wouldnt put it pass him :)

If it were me I would definitely phone the emergency vet for advice.  The fact that he has not pooped would concern me more than if he had diarrohea and could indicate a blockage. :-\

Neither of those products will help but Pro-Kolin would only be used if he had diarrhoea - it doesn't help with vomiting. I'd ring your vets for advice if he is no better today.

Hi
I would also contact the vet. Some of my dogs have had vomiting that normally clear up within 24 hours, but my recent experience with Lottie has made me more cautious and when she wouldn't eat we knew it was more serious.Cockers are really strong little dogs but I just wouldn't take the risk.I have also found that our vets are very helpful over the phone and will try to keep costs down.
Hoping things get better soon

Just to let you know - we took him to the vets this morning and they've given him an injection 'to settle his stomach' which'll last for 24hrs and some sensitive tinned dog food, which I'm meant to feed him a spoon of every half hour until his apetite is back and then mix in with his normal food gradually.

That was at 10.30am. Since then, the spoon was very unsuccessful so tried a little syringe. I put in about a 5p coins size of food into his mouth about once an hour since, and each time about 15mins later he'd throw back up this grey water. I phoned the vets back again about 5pm who said to give up for today, and try again tomorrow morning, and if no better to take him back in for bloods and an xray :(

The only good thing is, last night my OH came up with the idea that Dylan only really does poo when we take him for a walk, so we put him on the lead about 11pm last night and walked to the end of our road and he poo'd! Just a little, but perfectly formed :D He's peed several times too now as he's not going out to eat grass any more (which is alittle more worrying that he's being sick without grass and still not eating).

Fingers crossed for a hungry dog tomorrow!

All is well thanks. He's been keeping us on our toes - and he's got a lot of fattening up to do! He was skinny enough as it was before he stopped eating for 3 days!

My OH's parents have been looking after him whilst we're at work in the day time and he's learnt to eat a spoonful of the tinned food - off the spoon!  ph34r :005:

He's appetite really picked up yesterday morning so he was eating the tinned stuff every half hour like the vet said, and we've slowly weaned him back onto his normal food a few hours ago, and thankfully no sickness at all!

It's such a releif - its quite hard to explain how releived I am he's eating, and as my OH's parents didnt see him when he was ill they dont quite get why I'm so excited that he hasnt been sick and how strict I was being at the whole "this food only" and "watch him every second", but they have done :D very thankful to them too!

Thank doG he is on the mend. Willow had colitus when she was small and although she never went off her food, she would have the runs and shed weight so quick and there is not much of her anyway. I know what you mean re the worry.

Hope he fattens up soon  :005: :005:
