Ruby is "killing" her toys and more besides!! help
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:29:21 AM »
Hi, Ruby is nearly 8 months old she's turned into a rebel! she seems to be taking great pleasure in destroying all her toys! even the ones that are meant to be indestructible... she has all her big teeth now and never really chewed much during teething but now its costing a fortune in toys. she's even destroyed all the soft cuddlies she used to adore when she was tiny?? i did king of think to myself that its not ideal but they're her toys until last night when I discovered a chewed clarks school shoe, and a PlayStation controller cue very cross mummy and not happy son what can I do to stop her destroying..?

It's a normal stage - take a look at JanD's thread below about Bobby chewing for some pics of Adolescent Cocker Carnage....
While she has all of her adult teeth, the molars are still settling in, and this can give some dogs a seriously overwhelming urge to chew.  Make sure she has plenty of things she can chew, keep other things out of her reach and also ensure she has plenty of mental stimulation, as boredom can increase the desire to chew (chewing can also be a stress release, so do ensure there's no anxiety at being left of similar at play).

Phoebe was a chewer and particularly things she wasn't meant to chew. We had to lift everything out of her reach, be extra vigilant and at times limit where she went because she just couldn't seem to help herself.

Archie has just started this too. Let's hope it's a phase! Ive given up re-stuffing his cuddly toys and sewing up the holes because he wrecks them again in 30 seconds flat.  >:D His obsession is with soft furnishings. There is a hole in my sofa cover (Laura Ashley, silk  >:(  >:( ) and I have to keep my pillow on top of the wardrobe during the day. Yesterday I was changing the sheets and was surprised to see the whole duvet begin to disappear through the door by itself! He isn't interested in chewing things like pigs ears or his stag bar but he will have a go at rawhide bones stuffed with tripe. I got one from Tesco.

This is the best advice.............I used/use old socks & any piece of rag tied into tight knots as toys that CAN be chewed. :shades:
Also try to teach the things that are o.k. & things that are not.  I use the word NO & GOOD GIRL. Others I'm sure will have other ideas  :o

Oh don't I know what you're going through - Bobby is wrecking everything in sight to the point where the crate has come back out today - can't even leave him for half an hour. As for toys, Roxy who is now 20 months just destroys them in minutes - total waste of money - I prefer to give her empty plastic bottles - tops removed.

Hoping it's a phase Molly is 8 months also and destroyed 3 beds in 3 days little minx so had to go back to vet bed. Last month she ate 1/4 of a new dress nibbled two towels and been pulling the fleece which covers the crate through the bars for a good nibble.
She's destroyed a few toys too.
Bella when she was a pup ate a chair arm and she too destroyed beds, ate a sock. She doesn't do anything naughty now

I found giving mine a stag bar helped  and if they had something they shouldn't be chewing swap it for the stag bar they soon seemed to catch onto the idea of chewing that instead. They are still settling their back teeth in at that age.

Ever since we got Alfie we have just done our best to keep things out of his way and it works 90% of the time...but there is a lot that can't be helped such as my toddlers toys laying around and he can't help but steal the little toys and run off to chew them the little monster.
