Im scared
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:24:20 PM »
Cupar is going to the vet on Friday for an annual check. His booster vaccination is due but last time when he had his 2nd vaccine he had a reaction, face and eyes swollen and had to have emergency treatment of Piriton Injection. We have since then changed to a new vet. This new one is nearer home. We obviously have to discuss this with the new vet but I am REALLY very nervous . What do I say if he wants to give Cupar the vaccine ? Help!!!!!!!!!

Mention it to your vet - i would imagine they would give the piriton injection before the boosters.

Make sure you stay at the vets for at least 20mins after the boosters (if not more) to make sure he's ok.

I only get my dogs boosters done every 3 years as after researching the boosters, many reports say they stay immune for up to 7 years. I still get the annual check every year though :)

Yup talk about it with the vet.  As it is a new vet, they may not be using the same brand of vaccine - I know that some are better re side effects than others.

Yes I was hoping that they may use a different brand. I know that research states that it is not necessary to vaccinate yearly but this leads to restrictions as training/agility classes, home boarding etc all want to see an up to date vaccination certificate.
Ive been dreading this day coming, and here it is and Im getting all stressed now  :'(

I have just been through the very same with Cassie. (see thread Problems with booster )
She is now 3 and at her first booster she reacted just the same as Cuper, her head just ballooned. Our vet gave her a different injection (Nobivac) last year  which she was fine with. BUT this year they refused to buy in Nobivac saying they were loosing money and I should find another Vet. I couldn't find one that kept Nobivac
After much soul searching and discussing this on this forum I decided to go to another vet and go ahead with a  different make of booster ( although many advised Titer testing rather than a booster) some years ago I had a little pup die from Distemper and this weighed heavily on my decision. Also Cassie comes into contact with dogs from all over the country and France and Spain (if not the actual dogs ,their pee and pooh !!!)
To cut a long story short Cass was injected yesterday, I was sick with worry. We stayed close to the vet anticipating a reaction, for over an hour   .... THANKFULLY there was none. The new vet was very supportive and his Nurses even more so.We don't live that far from the vets so thought if anything happened I could get back quickly I must have followed Cass all over the house for at least two hours keeping an eye on her !!!!!!
As someone said here, the decision has to be yours but I felt between the devil and the deep blue sea, what is best well........ we all have a different opinion but all have our dogs best  interests at heart and I am grateful for the advise and interest that others on here give
You will do what is best for Cupar

Do you have to vacinate?  Will the vet titre test instead as there is a great deal of research into the need (or not) for vaccination.  In view of the reaction last time, I think you should talk through all the options last time.

Have a read of this http://www.naturalrearing.com/coda/l_uk_canine_vac_survey.html

Will discuss this with vet but what about people who require to see up to date vaccination certificate as I mentioned in this post and also what about insurrance companies ??

I think that you find that most insurance companies will not cover an un vaccinated dog.
If you take your dog abroad as I do you have to have up to date jabs-

I don't recall seeing vaccination as a requirement to insurance policies but I could be wrong.

Like Jenny says ask about titre testing, one of my boys reacts to vaccines and this is the path we are going to take soon.

Sorry to hear about your scarey episode, I would definitely conduct the titre testing before vaccinating. As Jenny says some dogs have immunity for life simply from their puppy vaccinations. Vets won't tell you that as it takes money away from them  ;)

Well Cupar was at his new vet today and I couldnt asked for a nicer person. What a lovely guy we saw. He took on board all my concerns, and had Cups notes from previous vet, and made a phone call to the advice line of the company who supplies the vaccine. Outcome : Cupar is to have the vaccine in 2 seperate parts. The Nobivac DHPPi on Monday and Lepto the following Monday . Meanwhile he has to get Piriton x 2 day until Tuesday. Then Piriton from Friday until the following Tuesday. Bit of a hastle and probably cost more but a what a relief.

Gosh.............. I wish my new vet had been as good !!. He was concerned but not to the lengths that yours went to. Thank G she was fine this time but in my highly "nervous" state I didn't take in what the new make was and I had forgotten to take her vaccination chart, I am going back with it to get this and her passport up to date
Nobivac is the one I was trying to find as I knew Cass didn't react to that last time.  She had both the DHPPI and the Lepto together then and was fine.
SO glad for you that Cupar is Ok................ but do we go through it all again next year. Plus Cass is due for her next Rabies injection in April and I| just don't want to think about it !!!!!!!!!!!

Nobivac was the brand that he reacted to , and it is also the brand that this new vet uses. Hence the piriton/seperate vacs regime. I dont know if it is because I mentioned when discussing allergies that I said I was a nurse that he went down that route but I dont think so, he really was concerned . My goodness what worry these little scamps give us  ;) Thanks to you all for your posts
