PRA Heath Checks
« on: March 30, 2012, 12:00:14 PM »
Wasn't sure if this should go on here or in health so please move if needed. I just winded if anyone could give their opinions on Health checks on the sire and dam before having a litter. Is it acceptable to mate a dog or bitch which is affected by Pra to a clear dog/bitch?? I know they could produce carrier puppies but is there a danger of doing this please, could a puppy be affected?? Also is it normal for a dog's health checks to not show on the health test finder on the Kennel Club?? I've been looking into these health checks and would just like some opinions please.
Thanks :) :)

Affected to clear would only produce carriers, the only reason the results aren't shown on the KC website or paperwork is if people have the tests done by companies like Laboklin, which the KC will not publish their results.  They only accept results from Optigen/Antagene

Yes that's often the case but have come across some breeders who claim to have tested when they haven't (and either can't/wont produce copies of test results when requested). If test results don't appear on the KC site and the breeder won't show/send copies of the certificates, then I'd be v suspicious ph34r

I have noticed that one dog is a show champion and dosen't have any health checks recorded, all by good breeders. Is it ok for breeders to breed from affected dogs even to a clear stud/dam?

Personally i wouldn't care if the dog is a show champ, if the breeder hasn't bothered to do any health checks i would walk away.
I can't see a reason to use an affected dog for breeding either

I've spoken to the Kennel Club as there is quite a difference in price between Optigen and Laboklin and other Kennel Clubs such as Germany show Laboklin results.  So if you import a Laboklin tested dog from say Germany and register it with our KC the result will show on that dogs paper work.  Apparently it's to do with where the patent for the test is registered.

But Sharon is right in saying our KC wont publish the result but the KC told me they do accept and register it on their records (if you provide them with the paperwork) and counts if you want to be an Assured Breeder.
