Do bitches scent mark ??
« on: July 15, 2012, 08:34:53 AM »
Does anyone know if bitches scent mark ? Mollie is day 9 of her 2nd season, yesterday she scratched her blanket up in her bed and did a small wee on it then stood sniffing it   :-\ She had just been out and 'performed' so didn't need to  :dunno: she then did
a v small one on the door mat and this morning her bedding was damp !She has been clean since she was 4 months . We did take her crate away yesterday as we thought she no longer needed it  :shades: though we put it back last night incase that was the problem.
I realise it could be an infection though I feel it is somehow related to her season  :dunno:

Yes, they do. Our first bitch definitely did. She would look for high tufts of grass to scent!

Lexi does it too. It's infuriating. Her favourite place is the bathroom mat and I don't know why.

Interestingly I'd never experienced this before in bitches I'd had as a child, but my older 2 both started doingit around their seasons and despite inowbeing spayed they continue to do it whilst out of walks.

I now believe that it may be 'awakened' in them to do as a result of their season / hormones etc as I've discovered that my parents had bitches spayed pre first season, so I'd be interested to know if anyone who spayed their cocker pre first season has a girl who scent marks?

Our first dog Cassie was spayed pre season and she scent marked a lot. Never inside though, always on walks.

Bang goes my theory  maybe the bitches when I was growing up just weren't bothered by scenting then :dunno:

My guess is it is more to do with how dominant their personality is. Cassie was a collie cross and much more dominant than Ruby who is a springer/retriever cross. Although in the past week or so I think Ruby has started doing it, maybe because we now have Jem who is 7 months old. Ruby is in charge of her ;)

Thankyou for your replies  :D Hopefully it is just a symptom of her season as I have just read the sticky on bitches seasons which states they may scent mark to advertise their condition  :021: as she is now in the most fertile phase it seems likely that is the cause  :016: I do hope so  ;)

Willow does it a little bit when out on walks but has done it a few times only in the house when my friend has visited with her male Bichon Frise  :-\

Poppy is the only one I've had that did it. Interestingly when Holly had a wee, Poppy would sniff and then mark over the top, but only when out on a walk and not in the garden, didn't notice her doing that with Rosie though. All were spayed.

Mine definitely scent mark. If Penny has a wee, they all dash over to her spot and one by one they all wee on top of were she piddled and that's my boy and girls alike.

They scent mark worse when in season.
