Albert not well after frontline
« on: August 24, 2012, 10:05:33 AM »
We put some frontline on Albert yesterday and he wasn't very well afterwards.  He was ok for about 2 hours or so then went really lethargic and kept lying down and rubbing his tummy across the floor.  I rubbed his tummy for a bit and he seemed to like that (so I assume he had tummy pains).  I ended up making my husband sleep in the spare bedroom and Albert slept with me, he kept coming over to me in bed and I had to keep rubbing his tummy - he finally settled off at 5am!  He seemed ok this morning, just very tired (but then so am I !!), he ate his breakfast and went outside for a bark.  I feel awful as I've had to leave him on his own (am now at work).  My mum and dad are going round to see him at 11.30 then will take him back to their house for the rest of the day til I finish work.

We've used frontline on him lots of times before and hes always been ok.

Has anyone else had any problems with frontline?  Are there any alternatives which do not contain quite so many chemicals?

thanks, Alison

Sorry to hear Albert has been having a difficult time.

I've not had any problems with Frontline, it could be that it caused him to feel like this or it may well be something else  :-\

I don't use it personally (not looked into it yet), but I know there are some people on here that use Billy No Mates, which I believe is a natural product that you add to their food to prevent fleas. Someone with more experience of it will post i am sure :)

Hope he feels better soon.

My dad has just called, he's just arrived at our house and Albert is now fine and is running around the garden with his ball.  Have been so worried about him whilst at work this morning.  I'm absolutely shattered, can't wait to go home!

One things for sure I won't be using frontline again.  Can anyone tell me any more about Billy No Mates?

thanks

Hi my old dog had a major reaction to frontline so now I steer away from pesticides as much as possible.  I've always used tea tree and neem based shampoos (and in the height of the season make up a spritzer with a few drops of tea tree oil or neem if I can get it to spray the dogs with).  I've never had a flea infestation (mostly one or two) or a single tick and I check the dog daily for them.  Touch wood this method has worked for me.

I believe seaweed and other herbs which are in BNM have natural deterrents to pests

I've never really had a problem on the flea front  ph34r but do use stronghold during the summer months. This year we have been plagued by ticks - 4 or 5 crawling on Archie after every walk.  :020: I started to use BNM after reading about it here and after just 3 weeks use (it takes a while to start to work) I noticed that there were no more ticks. I haven't see one for months now. It is brilliant stuff. I used the last of my stronghold last month and won't be buying anymore. I got BNM from Amazon. There is a liquid version and a powder. I got the powder. You sprinkle a teaspoon on their food every day. It stinks but Archie doesn't mind at all. He is wet fed so it mixes in easily like a sort of herby topping!! I would definately give it a go if Albert has had a reaction to Frontline.

Hi

Hope Albert is feeling loads better now.  :luv:

I don't use any of the chemical flea prevention any more.  I've been using Billy No Mates on Toby for about five or six months and, touch wood, everything OK at the moment.  It does take a few weeks before it works though.  You give one scoop a day over food and it lasts for ages.  You can read about it / order it here and the price includes postage:

Another vote here for BNM - it repels ticks, fleas, and mites.  We have been using it for Jess since she was little and she has never had a single tick - with our previous dog we had not discovered BNM and ticks were a regular occurence.   You need to give it for about 3 weeks before it has full effect.  Best place to get it is direct from CSJ, they send it post free.

Another BNM fan here  :shades:
Ours have been on it for 3 yrs without any prob's  :D
They still get the occasional tick although far less than previously...in fact i've only found one on Alfie this year & considering his penchance for delving into undergrowth etc that is a miracle  :shades:
We use the powder formula (one scoop each) sprinkled on their food once a day.
It is also available in liquid form.  :shades:

Pleased to hear Albert is feeling better  :luv:
