Socialisation
« on: September 16, 2012, 04:51:48 PM »
Has anyone got any good tips on socialising your pup? Cooper starts his puppy classes tomorrow, and so far every other dog he has came across he's shyed away from and hid.

I don't know if this is just because they are a lot bigger? Hoping he will socialise with all the other pups tomorrow  :fear2:

I wouldn't worry too much.

The first time I took Lily she screamed like a banshee every time another dog came near her  ph34r  by the end of the first lesson she'd settled enough to meet a few of the smaller ones, it took her a couple a times before she was confident enough to meet all the dogs  :D  Now, there's no holding her back, loves every dog she meets, no fear, just wants to play  :luv:

Hi Fifi, We took ours with us eveywhere we went, because he didnt have his final jabs we just carried him to places like pets at home and to see friends and family, we carried him when we took our other dog for a walk. Through our vets we went to a puppy party which was quite fun.
Then when he was old enough we went to a puppy class, which was really for the socialisation side of things rather than the training.

It took Henry a little while to be brave enough to start playing with other dogs (doing the puppy bow thing rather than shying away), and he had a few experiences where he screamed like hell and ran away to the corner of the park fence. He still does it with some dogs now (doesn't like whippets or generally frenetic dogs - still screams as if he's being murdered!). I'm sure Coooper will be fine in the class - it helps if he has other small dogs/puppies of a similar age to play with. Has she met any other tiny dogs? Henry's best friend is a tiny cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles crossed with a toy poodle) - she's so small and light (but mad!) that he's not intimidated! He's getting more playful with other dogs now (aged 19 weeks).
Good luck - I'm sure she'll be fine.

Riley had his first puppy class literally the day he could go out.
Apart from meeting my friends dog the day before (which he howled and back off at ) he hadnt met any dogs since leaving his mum and siblings.
He was a bit hyper and scatty at the class but soon calmed down .
Sure he will be fine.

Thanks for that, feel less worried now!

Fingers crossed he'll do great and make lots of new friends :)
