Ulcerated cornea
« on: February 16, 2013, 05:55:30 PM »
Came home from a few hours out with a friend yesterday to find that Teddy's eye was weeping and closed over.

Took him straight to the vet who put some green dye in it and looked at it with an ultraviolet light, to discover that he's got an ulcerated cornea. His pupil was so tiny, she said he must be in an awful lot of pain. :'(

While she had him on the table, I asked her to look at his ears as he'd been bothering with the one on the same side as his bad eye (I'm wondering whether it was scratching at his ear that caused the injury to his eye?) - he had a sore ear too.

Because his pupil was so tiny, she gave me Fucithalmic vet and Canaural asked me to go back again this morning. I saw our regular vet who said that the pupil was dilated now, and he was satisfied that it was a superficial injury but to up the eye drops to 4-5 times a day and go back at the beginning of next week.

Anyway, after we'd been home for a whole and I'd taken Teddy out for a walk, I noticed that his other eye was starting to show the same symptoms (drooping, with the corner of his eye covering the eye ball). He's also got diarrhoea - could this be a reaction to the eye dye, drops and ear drops?

Has anyone else's dog had the same thing? If so, what caused it and how long did it take to heal up?

Of course I'm worrying that it's something more serious than a minor scratch to the eye now.

I know just how awful eye problems can be!!!  If either eye starts to look bulgy, take Teddy straight back to the vet - I don't want to frighten you, but this is how Ozzy was when he got the grass seed up through his mouth into the back of his eye, although no diarrhoea - watch him like a hawk!!!!  Will bethinking of you, let us know haw things progress.  Sending big hugs to you and Teddy  :bigarmhug:

It was because of Ozzy awful experience that I took Teddy straight to the vet yesterday. (I won't lie - I went straight into panicky, worse-case scenario, saying to my husband "a dog on COL lost his eye like this! Teddy could go blind!!) ph34r

The vet thinks it's an injury from playing too hard with our other dog, a large lab - Teddy plays very rough with her, and the only way Bea can get him off her when he has her pinned  on her back is to boot him hard with both back legs.

I will keep an eagle eye on him over night and see how he is again tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.

Try not to worry too much - it's the wrong season for grass seeds, but, if things don't improve rapidly, then ask for a referral to a specialist sooner rather than later.  Not that it would have done any good in Ozzy's case, the damage was almost immediate, it just took a day or two for symptoms to appear.  They couldn't see anything in Ozzy's eye when we first took him to the vet, and diagnosed conjunctavitis, so at least your vet has actually found something.  I hope he improves soon. xx

Ollie was diagnosed with same thing on 2nd jan (after a long walk across the marshes the day before).  He was prescribed chloramphenicol drops which appeared to fix the ulcer. However, he then developed uveitis and was then put on steroid pills (which he had a very bad reaction to).  Steroids stopped and steroid drops instead.  Looked fine until last week - and another ulcer discovered. Back on chlor drops.  Ulcer fixed.  Now off all meds after extensive eye checks by specialist.  He is ok at present after much worry and lots vet visits. Just to say watch him very carefully and if you are at all worried, take Teddy back to your vet. Eyes are not to be messed with.

In the past one of my cats got dreadful diarrhoea when he was on Fucithalmic (I assumed from rubbing his eyes after the drops and licking the back of his paw and ingesting some of the Fuci), so guess it might be what is causing it in Teddy.

Thanks for all your replies.

Teddy's eye doesn't seem any worse today, but it doesn't seem any better either.
He's happy enough in himself - eating fine and running around but has awful diarrhoea which I'm going to out down to the meds for now (thanks Snoo).

I've Googled images of ulcerated corneas in dogs and it does look very much like them,so I guess it's a matter of careful watching and low-tolerance waiting - I think I'll take him back to be looked at on Tuesday if he doesn't get worse/change.

I would take him back on Tuesday regardless. Ollie's eye improved quickly (within a couple of days) on the chlor drops. My vet asked to see him after 3 days for a recheck to see whether the ulcer was healing. The uveitis was an extra complication, but the external ulcer itself had healed within 3 days.

I didn't put that very well - what I meant was that I'll definitely take hi. Back on Tuesday, but sooner if he gets worse. :D

Apart from anything, I can't bear to think of him being in pain. The first vet did mention that she was worried it might be visitors.
