Chemical spay????
« on: February 17, 2013, 08:46:43 PM »
Hello, not been on here for a while, we have a new addition to our family a little girl called Bonny she is 18 weeks old, we already have Riley he's an entire male but since we've got Bonny he got very excitable after a play session with her and would try and hump me and my son  >:D so we had Riley chemically castrated and its certainly done the trick and calmed his randy ness! My question is (sorry I'm waffling!) is there a chemical castration for a girl doggy? I don't intend on breeding from her but its going to be difficult to keep them apart when she's in season so wondering when to spay and by what method?? Any info on anyone would be soo helpful, I'm worried it would also alter her coat as she soo silky smooth  :003:

If you keep up with the chemical castration won't he not be bothered when age is in season ? I'm new to this so just my initial thoughts !! I've never heard of chemical spay and to be honest I would have thought the one op although uncomfortable could be less stressful than lots of vets trips for needles ?
Hopefully some better informed people than myself will reply ! :005:

There of lots of reasons that dogs hump, he could just be excited. How old is Riley? I don't know anything about chemical castration but it I would imagine it will play havoc with his hormones

I don't know the answer to your question, re chemical spay, but I guess there are many solutions to your situation.
You could have Riley neutered - it would stop him making Bonny pregnant when she comes into season and they get to each other, but there is still no guarantee the humping will stop, as Ollie nathans mum said.  They could still mate and tie with no pregnancy produced.

You could leave Riley entire, and have Bonnie spayed before her first season, which again will guarantee against pregnancy, but not necessarily stop the humping.

You could watch them like a hawk, and when Bonny starts to come into season, keep them very safely separated, or if that's not possible, perhaps ask a friend or relative to look after him for the duration of the season.

.........

We recently introduced a male puppy to our house, and had an entire female. I took the decision to have my girl spayed (she is nearly 3). For me, I didn't want the possibilty of an unwanted pregnancy. My girl had matured naturally, and I want the same for our new boy. Her coat has changed, but she is just as lovely as before. He can now go on to mature without any added complications :005:

Those are just my reasons  for making the decision that I took. You will have your own, and know what is best for you and any possible scenarios you may find yourself and your dogs in  ;)

Thanks for your help guys, Riley is fully mature and will be 3 in June. And I don't want to have to separate them when Bonny is in season as they love each other so much which would be hard on them both, so i will get Bonny spayed but do I wait til after her 1st season now, or wait till she's  fully mature too?. Sorry to sound like such a newbie. I never owned a girl before always had boys! X thanks

The general consenses when I posed the question of "spay or not to spay" was "after her first season" ;) which in your case would be difficult unless he's neutered  :-\

We had Honey spayed before her first season. She had the keyhole surgery and was full of beans the very next day.  Our vet is happy to offer this before first season.  I am not sure if this is only for keyhole spay?

There are arguements for and against and you can do your own research on that (as it is a subject many have an opinion on!)

I just wanted to add that it can be done before first season (Honey was just under 6 months), and the key hole operation has a much quicker recovery time (we were on normal walks from the next day).

So this maybe one option you want to research.

Our vet recommends the bitch to be 6 months............there are lots of schools of thoughts on this subject, I just went with what my vet suggested as I knew I wanted her spayed.

Thanks all, I'm going to call the vet in the morning regarding your post honeyg the keyhole surgery seems a great way to go ahead with! The thought of her going through an op doesn't appeal but the keyhole won't seem as bad.
There's so much different advice given re girls than boys, the chemical approach has worked for us with Riley but doesn't appear there's a girls option, at least my heads a bit clearer thanks very much xx  :D :luv:
