Should I or shouldn't I
« on: February 26, 2013, 04:59:19 PM »
Phoebe had puppies in October 2012 and we have kept one of the girls for showing. Phoebe loved her puppies and was a fantastic mum. She still wants to suckle Luna who is almost 5 months old and mum and daughter are very close. She coped really well and did not lose condition or coat at any time.
She has been retired from the showring now for over a year and is 3.5 years old. I do want to breed from her again as the puppies were beautiful quality. Just need to add that she and dad are fully DNA tested and free from PRA and FN.
She has just come into season (she usually goes 10 months) and although I was going to give her a rest this time, I think she misses her babies. what are your thoughts on back to back breeding as a one off. This is not a money making exercise as I am a respected breeder and have never done this before. I do show my dogs and want to do the best for the breed.
No nastiness please as I am only asking for opinions.

Not going to be nasty, just to say I have no idea. Goos luck with whatever you decide.

I personally wouldn't, the only time my girls have a litter back to back is if their seasons are 12 months+ and with a couple of my girls that is normal.  If her last litter are only 5 months, I think I would leave it till next time, she's only 3.5 years old, so still plenty of time for her to have another. :)

Imho Lynne, no i don't think back to back breeding is fair on the bitch.
I know you said Phoebe is a good mum but thats not a reason to breed her again so quickly.
It sounds like she is happy with Luna atm & another litter so soon 'might' upset the dynamics.
Sorry i'm not being nasty just my honest opinion  :D

How about you give her a break after having 2 litters and 13 puppies from her in less than 10 months  :-\.

I know of a woman with 2 bitches, came into season together and both mated up resulting in....wait for it....20 pups  :fear2: how on earth they are going to care, clean, trim nails, feed, socialise & care for 20 pups! crazy!...how they will keep track & update new owners...and they are asking £100 more for each pup than 'the going price' maybe to pay for a cleaner :005: ph34r (completely off topic...well kind of breeding related) x

Not going to do it.

Sounds like the right decision. Luna definitely needs a break with her last litter being born only 5 months ago - like Sharon says, she's still relatively young and if you do want another litter from her, there is still plenty of time to do that next season, although we generally don't have more than 2 litters from our girls.
