It's all gone!!
« on: February 27, 2013, 05:21:41 PM »
So....a bit extreme...

but we've gone from this:

to this:

Being a new cocker mum I am learning the hard way about matting etc. so we have decided to go back to basics and start again. And this time I will try to keep on top of such things.

So pleased her face still looks the same, but wish we had kept some feathers on the legs....but hubby over-ruled me!  I will be grateful after muddy walks I am sure!

But, the groomer said she was a very good girl, so that is a relief :)  She seemed very happy and excitable when she came out :)  I just keep having to look twice at her, she looks so small now!  We have booked in again for three months time so will see what needs doing then!

Next question - will she be cold now? do I need to 'Amazon Prime' a coat????

She looks lovely.  :luv: Archie had a shave today too and he's been in his equafleece all day. I booked the trim when it had started to turn warmer - I feel a bit guilty now!

I hope you don't mind me asking but why do you think you got her grooming regime wrong ? I'm a very new cocker mum and so far only introducing a brush x

I think she looks fab - I am a fan of the shorter coat. Had the same trouble with Clover matting up and had her cut short last year (which our vet also  advised after an op to remove a few grass seeds that had worked into her skin!) It's grown like mad since November so she is off to get it done again next week. I certainly wouldn't put a coat/fleece or whatever on her - good grief, only today, in a strong icy cold wind, she jumped into a sheep trough full of cold water and waded around, dunking her tennis ball - she keeps herself warm enough running and chasing after her ball - she doesn't need a coat! She's a dog!  Just my opinion for my own dog  ph34r and no offence intended to any others who favour coats on dogs. ;)

I wouldn't bother with a coat either, she is a young dog and as long as she is active on her walks, she will be fine :)

(She looks gorgeous by the way).

It's just a case of working out the right balance between managing the length of coat / keeping them mat free etc..

She looks lovely. We have Albert clipped with slightly longer feathers on legs and keep his ears long. Its so much easier to manage when everywher is so muddy. Also some cockers have gorgeous long silky fur and they look beautiful with all the feathering etc but Alberts fur grows likea sheep - fluffy outwards and curly

Aw thanks everyone - I am still getting used to it.  I do miss her feathery legs though!  but it was nice when she came in from her walk today not to have to spend time picking out various twigs, branches and leaves that have been sticking like velcro to her!!

As for why I think I got the grooming wrong, I just don't feel like I paid attention to her joints/ears, and once matting appeared there was no getting rid of it (from what I could tell).  Maybe it would have happened despite my best endeavours as it had become quite long...not sure. But I will pay closer attention to her joints from now on with brush and comb!

I figure 'proper' show cockers (I mean Crufts style here...not sure of the correct term!!) must also have a run about and walks like the rest of them -  so no idea how they prevent matting ???? - any suggestions welcomed for when it does start growing back.

It is taking some getting used to though - I keep giggling when I see her as her legs look quite funny. On the plus side I thought she was gaining too much weight, but without all the fluff I can see she is the perfect figure and ribs can be felt too!
