Ozzy had his first pizzle stick but it made him sick
« on: May 11, 2013, 01:48:38 PM »
I am always looking for a natural chew for Ozzy and after reading many favorable comments on COL and other dog forums I ordered Rocco pizzle sticks from Zooplus.
I gave him the smallest one in the packet, just to try him and he really enjoyed.
It took him 45 minutes to eat it and I was a bit worried about the last bit, if he tried to swallow it before it was small enough but he seemed fine.

He seemed a bit restless through the night and then at 5am he was sick, it was bile and there seemed to be a bit of pizzle not chewed up, it was only about one inch long.

He seemed fine this morning, normal walk, normal poo but he has now gone quiet and did not want to go for his lunch time walk.

Has anyone else had this problem with pizzle sticks?
Do I try again or throw them away?

Thanks in advance.

No problem with pizzle sticks here, apart from the smell :shades:

Our staffie can eat the normal rawhide chews with out any bother, but if she is given the white strip ones she will be sick within a short while. Not a pizzle stick but then i dont know what one of them is

I think it was coincidence or caused by the last bit not being chewed. I'd try another and see if you get the same result?

William and Louis like them and are usually quite careful about chewing them, but William threw up a piece about an inch long a couple of weeks ago. They've been having one or two a week for a while now and that's the only problem I've noticed.

Has Ozzy been OK today?

Yes thanks elaine he is nearly back to normal but he has started eating grass so his tummy is still a bit upset.

I have looked at some more reviews and on the American Amazon there is a one dog who nearly died because a piece of pizzle lodged in his stomach.

I know loads of dogs are fine with them but I have thrown the rest away and have ordered some venison trachea.

I felt so sorry for him, he knows that if he has a chew it is after his last walk and the next night he expected another pizzle and kept asking for it because he enjoyed it, he had to be satisfied with a fish twist.

Liesl once swallowed a small amount of pizzle and, although she never went on to display any negative symptoms, it frightened me, too.

Usually, one pizzle would last a couple of days with her and when they reduced in size I would throw them away and get a new one out. One morning I had given her a fresh one and in no time at all I noticed that it seemed really small and that she had the entire piece in her mouth. In haste, I jumped up to go to the kitchen to offer her a swap, but when I reached the fridge for the chicken, greedy gabriella  swallowed the buggering thing! I panicked and ran to the vets.

In short, there was nothing they could do (they wouldn't induce vomiting because that could cause an obstruction in the oesophagus if it got stuck on the way out and obviously they wouldn't open her up before she displayed any signs of a blockage). Vet gave me some paraffin oil to add to her food for 3 or 4 days to coat stomach/intestines just in case.

Thankfully, nothing ever came of it except I no longer use the normal sized pizzles. Instead I now use the extra long pizzles. They are ridiculous in length, smell appalling and cost about £30 but on the plus side I can relax and she can have a good chew without fear of any repercussions!

*They usually sell them at Zooplus but they're currently out of stock. New order expected beginning June.
