Jasper has a matted area
« on: May 18, 2013, 09:28:28 PM »
I've just been grooming Jasper, I don't usually do it, my daughter does it every night and I check him over once a week and give him a good brush. Anyway, I've found a matted bit on the back of his leg. I'm assuming Holly has just missed that little bit each night. I've tried to brush it out but it started to look sore. Is there anything that anyone could recommend to get it out or should I cut it out? I don't care what it looks like and obviously don't want him to be uncomfortable so happy to cut it out if need be x

Sometimes you can take it out with thinning scissors, then it doesn't notice so much  ;)

I tend to put my hand in behind and slicker through the worst first with my hand as buffer to the sensitive skin.  Next I use a spratts76comb to gently take out the easy bits.  If there's anything left after that I use the comb to buffer between skin and thinning scissors then cut into the matt with thinning scissors at a 90 degree angle to the comb (i.e. up the matt in direction of hair growth to then comb out rather than across the matt).

If Jasper wears a harness, the areas at the back of the legs are more prone to matting unfortunately, but in a balance between a dog choking itself and pulling vrs a matt I decided to risk the matting and just cut out as she is so thick and fluffy its not noticeable.
Proud to be owned by a cocker spaniel.

Taz won't sit still long enough to brush them out so its cut it out for him. He doesn't tend to get many on his legs though

I've got one of these and find it very good at getting in behind. I have the stubby blade ones aswell but prefer this one.

I  have a Matt splitter,  which cuts through the Matt so it brushes out easily
My beautiful little boy Charlie :)

Thanks for all your advise, I've got done thinning scissors so will try that. It's actually his hind leg, he tends to sit lent onto that side so maybe rubbing on the floor has done it. It's the first one he's had that I couldn't get out!
Thanks again :) x
