I know it's going to be guesswork but what are the possible pup colours of a choc roan and dark blue roan?

I know the dad carries the orange roan gene. How much influence do the direct parents' colouring have verses their lineage?

Odie's breeder has a litter expected in 2 weeks and she is going to keep me posted on colours  :D
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Depends on what colours both parents carry really. To produce liver/chocolate or orange, both parents must carry the respective genes - if only one parent carries the orange gene, then no orange puppies will result and if only one parent is liver/chocolate or carries the gene, then there will be no liver/chocolate puppies. Some breeders DNA test their dogs so they know which colours they carry but if they haven't done that, then it's just wait and see

OK, thanks for that Jane.  It's really complex, isn't it!!  Will just have to sit it out for a fortnight.....

Do you know whether the dark blue has thrown any orange roan or choc roan pups before?  If so, then you will know they carry these genes. The choc roan will carry choc.

Emily (choc roan) had parents these colours - half litter blue, half choc.

Charlies grandparents are choc roan and blue roan...his dad was blue roan...

Charlie's parents are orange roan and blue roan. All 6 pups were pale blue roans.

I guess it depends on which is the strongest/more dominant gene

Blue is dominant over liver and orange, which is why both parents must carry the orange/ liver gene to produce any pups this colour.

Sounds like I may be out of luck then, as I'm not after a blue roan  :-\

You might be in luck. I remember seeing Rowans pedigree - she's a brown roan - her parents were a black and white and blue roan...

Don't lose heart - blue can still carry liver.  (Funny though, when I went on breeder's waiting list for Emily, I was after a blue).

Yes that's right. Rowan's mum was black & white  :luv: but some of her litter mates were choc roan (JennyBee's Brodie) and there is choc right back that line plus loads of choc roan on her dad's line. Her dad had previously thrown blue and choc roans so her breeder had a fair idea there would be choc in the litter. She also got a blue roan with tan (Hamish on here) for the first time so even an experienced breeder can get a nice surprise!
Proud to be owned by a cocker spaniel.
