Frozen Mince
« on: December 20, 2013, 11:16:24 AM »
Hi, This may be question for all you raw feeders please,  We home cook for Cosmo as he has many allergies, We have been using human grade meat from the supermarket but have discovered our local petshop does frozen mince that he says is human grade that he gets from a butcher. It is 90p for 400 grams. This seems to be remarkably cheap to me ( having absolutely no experience in this whatsoever) Is it likely to be large amounts of fat in this? Or is your guess as good as mine?He does chicken, Turkey, Beef, Chicken and Rabbit, lamb, Heart, and chicken liver. is there any that are likely to be less fat than others? Sorry if I'm showing my ignorance, :) I don't want to change and him have too much fat in his diet.

The minces should be human grade from DEFRA approved sources if that's what you're being told, but my guess is they may be high in fat because they'll be made up from all the bits of the animals that people don't want to buy from the butcher. I've heard that some butchers will also add rusk or use unsold sausages in their pet minces. If that's the case they won't just be pure meat and may contain preservatives and salt as well as rusk.

They may also contain minced bone, which is fine if you're going to feed them raw, but I notice you say you cook for Cosmo. It could be dangerous to feed a cooked mince containing bone as any fragments not minced up thoroughly would become brittle and sharp with cooking.

So if you're worried about either Cosmo's allergies or the amount of fat, they may be best avoided unless you can be 100% sure of the ingredients.

Hope that helps

Thankyou for that Elaine, you may well be right, we cooked some this morning and commented about the difference in texture and also how it felt more 'wet' and greasy. I didn't see any bone in it though but it did soak up a lot of water in the pressure cooker. Hmm, As you say, I think maybe we will  be very cautious with this, I don't want to upset his allergies.  :shades:
