Help please
« on: December 23, 2013, 04:02:35 PM »
Hi just took max out for toilet trip and he did a poo and then fell over in it. It's horrible and rainy here so I quickly ran upstairs to give him a quick shower off with puppy shampoo. His first shower etc. Max's breeder then said dont get his ears wet which I did but not on purpose and then said make sure I rinse him properly of shampoo or it can cause shock. Now I'm really worried. I have him wrapped in a towel that has been on the radiator. Hope some can reassure me. He is 9 weeks.

I wouldn't worry, I've never heard of not rinsing properly causing shock?  Just a slightly greasy puppy I would have thought! He'll be fine!

Thanks everyone I have been getting myself all worked up about it. Would he catch a cold if I didn't have water warm enough?  And why did she say don't get his ears wet? Thanks x

Most puppies are given a bath or two by their breeder before they go to their new homes, so he may have been bathed before. Your breeder probably meant don't get water inside his ears. As long as you've rinsed him well and are keeping him warm while he dries off there's nothing to worry about :D

When Louis was a puppy he used to poo in his crate and then paddle round in it during the night. I had to give him a quick bath and thorough dry more than once in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning.

He probably had a shake when you got him out the bath so that will have cleared his ears most likely! As part of your normal maintenance (makes him sound like a car  :005: ) you should be checking his ears regularly anyway to check they don't smell or look dirty/sore so just continue with that.

Ok thank you everyone. He is currently having a mad five minutes biting his towel so I can't have traumatised him to much? X

Bless him. He has stopped shivering and seems pretty dry now but I'm still going to worry. When is it ok for him to go out for toilet? X

Lots of good advice here - its understandable you worry about your little chap  :luv:

Next time you take him to the vet ask them to show you how to clean inside his ears - we do Fudge's every couple of days (and his teeth) - the amount of gunk we get out of his lugholes is disgusting.  :020:

While he is young it might be a good idea to get him used to a hair dryer saves a lot of time and a cold wet dog.

i have bathed my two from an early age ,they both love digging and getting muddy, now i have to watch the bath as they will both be in as soon as the water starts to run!
