Puppy sleeping
« on: January 03, 2014, 09:57:06 AM »
Hello all

We have a 11 week old blue roan cockaspaniel puppy, which we collected from the breeder 1 week ago, she seems to have kind of picked up potty training and is successful though out most of the day, she sleeps in her crate in the family living room in the day and will happily stay in her crate with the door closed on occasions. Unfortunately we are having trouble with her at night. The crate is put into the kitchen area (
which she is used to as that's where her food is and toilet area is.)
The crate has blankets/ soft bedding/ Teddy bear and we add a hot water bottle and a heart beat ticker every night and a item of clothing that smells of us. The problem is poppy wakes every hour and barks contiguously until someone goes to her then she will go back to sleep,.. This is a horrible circle Any advice please??????? We can not keep getting up every hour please help!!!

i am sure you must be getting very tired, we went through a similar thing. remember your puppy is very young and i guess the nigh barking is a mixture of looking for reassurance and possibly wanting to go to the toilet. our piupy hate to go to toilet in his crate, so in the and i slept on the sofa in the next room for about a month. when he barked i took him outside to go to the toilet. this involved little fuss , no talking to him. the barking became less frequent and eventually he settled all night. some people refcommend having the crate in your bedroom  and i know there are people who find this works very well. it is up to you , we just didn't want to have the puppy in our room. good luck and try to rest when you can. it is very tiring having a new puppy and you have to pace yourselves. i am sure it will get better very soon, just remember he is very young.

May be try covering the crate at night. I did this when mine was a pup and she settled really well as she probably felt secure. Ours have always slept in our room so we had her crate on the landing to start with as no room in the bedroom for it. I used to get up in the night if she stirred to let her out, then she went straight back in the crate until morning.

Definitely try covering the crate.  I had the same problem when Coco was a pup - once I made her crate a cosy den, she improved a lot  :D  I blocked off part of the crate with an upturned box and put in another box with a blanket for a bed and covered the crate with a blanket.  I think she felt much more cosy and secure  ;)

Our puppy is 14 weeks, never had a problem, also use the covering of the crate, only time she ever made noise was to tell us she wanted to go outside.

Maybe try keeping the crate in her usual area, as even though she's used to the kitchen, she would recognise the lounge as her relax sleep area . By moving the crate she might not be as comfortable. Try keeping her in the lounge see how she does

Hello!
Thank you everyone that has commented! Poppy has done really well over the past wel, she now sleeps from 11 -7am!! We covered her create like you all suggested and kept her in the same place! Now we have a few other problems! 1 - biting / nipping and 2) toilet - we used puppy pads that she  is used to and goes most of the time on!! But she won't go outside! Suggestions??

glad of the good progress. re biting and nipping, they all do it. normally when tired. just remove yourself from the situation or give them something in place of what you don't what them to chew on.
I never used puppy pads as I felt you have to re train them all over again to toilet on grass. I would take tilly out every 30-40 mins, before and after eating before and after being in the crate. praised her like mad when she did go outside and used a cue word. nothing was said if she had an accident inside and I would take her straight outside while she was still doing it so she could finish off outside with all the praise.
I was lucky as she took to this very quickly.
good luck.

Same here. Never used pads or paper. You could try moving the pad closer to the door each day and then put it outside the door. It may encourage her to use it. Also we have always used 'Go and be good' as cues when peeing/pooing. Puppies learn to associate the words with the action of elimination so you can basically get them to perform when you want them to. Use whatever phrase suits you when you see her wee or poo on the pad and use it every time. Eventually she will get used to going outside especially when you use your words.

Sounds like she's doing well though.

Hi our 14 week old pup wakes up a couple of times a night in her crate, usually needs a pee and sometimes a poo! The second time she wakes up she is just looking for company, so your puppy is doing amazing sleeping through the night :)

We two are struggling with toilet training, Bailey prefers to do it on the paper. She has had a few outside in the last few days but it can take ages, even when she has been asleep for a while and I know she is bursting! She only does it where there are stones or grass, I think that feels like the paper under her feet. I walk about for a while saying "pee pee" or "poo poo" everyone must think I'm nuts!!
If she eventually does it I give her a few smelly fishy treats and lots of praise. I still have paper in the house but dont make a fuss of her if she does it there and hope she will get the message that she gets all the treats if she does it outside.

Hopefully as they get older they dont need to go so often!

Good luck and let us know how you get on and any tips please.

Cheers Elaine
