Puppy grooming tips pls!
« on: January 13, 2014, 12:06:50 PM »
Hi there

Have had a couple of 'attempts' at grooming Coco my 11 week old cocker but I am struggling to get her to stay still and stop trying to bite the brush! How have you all managed with grooming your pups? Do you all use a proper grooming table? Any tips appreciated as I want to get her used to it and start as I mean to go on in looking aft her coat.

She had a bath yesterday so we have made a start I guess!

Thanks x

Mine likes to bite the brush too... in fact it is his absolute favourite toy...  >:D :005:

I don't have a grooming table but I stand him in the coffee table, which improves biting and wriggling no end - no idea why!

Just a little a day and they will get used to it - I used to stand Lottie on her big crate which worked well.  Seems to cut down on the wriggling an awful lot if you bring them more up to your height.

Failing that, wine is wonderfully calming.... For you at least  :005:

It's about consistency - put her up on a table/ counter/ ironing board every day for a few minutes and brush her all over.  If needs be put a harness on her and hold on this with one hand while you brush her using the other.  May be easier to keep her stationary this way if you're worried about her jumping off.  Also get her to sit on the table and administer lots of cuddles, tell her she's a good girl and give her a treat once she's let you brush her.  Pick up each foot, lift her tail, pick up ears, etc.  Treat, cuddles.  Repeat every day.  She will learn the table is a nice place to be.  My two boys particularly, ask to get onto the grooming table.  It's a special bonding time for us.

I agree with all the above comments - little and often is the way to go! My GSD is five now, and still tries to bite the brush. In fact, he runs and hides whenever I get it out - or the comb! Mad dog!  :005:

Thank you I will try and do a little each day with her then and hopefully she will get the hang of it! I suppose I need to pick my moment too, perhaps when she is feeling a little worn out after racing around!

It might help also if you buy a bath mat for them to stand on then they wont slip if you put them onto the table.  Jinley stands on our very large breakfast bar with a bath mat and towel cover.  She is much better on there than on the floor.

The only other tip I have is to keep doing it everyday even for 5 minutes which is something I wished I had done.

We have the same problem with our pup, she is obsessed with the brush!
I usually get on of my sons to hold her and also do it for a little while and give her treats and lots of praise.
Good to do it when she is a wee bit tired.
My 14 year old son brushed her yesterday and she was a good as gold, still goes a bit berserk when I do it!

My 2 go on my ironing board (at separate times), which I cover with towels. We're the same height then and it helps my back. I started their grooming slowly and gently, lots of cuddles and praise. I use a metal comb now, sometimes threaded with an elastic band. A few years on and they sit happily on the board while I groom them. When I've finished grooming them they lie down on the board and wait to get their 'well done' biscuit.  :luv:

That is a great idea about the bath mat! I have a proper grooming table, so it is easy for me to do mine, but it's really important that the dog feels safe and secure, so anything like a bath mat or something with a ridged surface would be much better than something smooth and possibly slippery.
