Anal gland removal tomorrow
« on: January 22, 2014, 02:50:02 PM »
Poor Bailey is going for an operation in the morning to have his anal glands removed.
We have great faith in our vet so no real worries about anything going wrong from that point of view.

Just wondered if anyone else had had their dogs done and if so can you give us some tips on how to help him recover?

No experience Helen, but everything crossed that all goes well for Bailey tomorrow.  Will look for updates. Xxxx

This is something I wanted Lyla to have done as she has so much trouble but cannot. Good luck, I'm sure it will be a relief for Bailey xx

Kooki had hers done last year and I can hand on heart say it is the best thing we could have done for her. Recovery was more straightforward than I was anticipating but I was not prepared for the size of the area they shaved or how swollen and sore she looked immediately after the op...Several months down the line and there have been no complications and more importantly she has a new zest for life which I felt incredibly guilty about as she must have been in a lot of discomfort for some time before the op.  Will be thinking of you tomorrow and feel free to pm if you have any questions etc

Jayne (Pearly) will be on later with some great advice and reassurance.  Pearl had hers done a couple of weeks ago and she is now very well and full of energy.

thankyou everyone. Ive just read through all 'Pearls' thread.

Very reasurring and quite relieved to be honest too. I know there will be horror stories if i 'Google' the operation
so I'm steering clear of doing that.
Thank goodness for This Wonderful Site and all the great advice :luv:

Hi Helen,

Have just updated Pearl's story which I hope will help with tomorrow.  Pearl is so much happier now.  She does occasionally try to scoot but I think it's more for attention  ;)  A difficult 3 days for me after the operation and I'm sure uncomfortable for Pearl but really worth it for the way she is now...

For once I opted not to have a phone call after the procedure - the Vet offered to call if there was a problem otherwise just collect her at 6pm.  I found it much easier than waiting for that call and imagining all sorts [as we do  ph34r] I knew she was in at 10 and it would be a long procedure so as soon as 2pm went I past I relaxed- spent the day at work and was really quite productive for once  :005:

Hope all goes well tomorrow for Bailey - don't be too shocked with his bare bottom - the fur does grow back and by 1st March, at her next grooming session Pearl's will need to be trimmed  :D  Oh! and her bottom did get more and more red as the evening wore on - it worried me enough to call the out of hours Vet but they reassured me it was totally normal and had reduced a great deal by the following morning.

The Partner at the Practice, who completed the procedure assured me that it is a very common procedure, that techniques have improved hugely in the last few years and that he had never known one go wrong - all helped with the decision though I was still jittery enough to seek reassurance on here...
