puppy not eating kibble
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:01:20 PM »
Alfie who used to devour anything put in front of him has recently over the last two to three weeks gone of his food. He was taking Hills, iams and james well beloved  before but all did not agree with him. We changed him over to burns puppy which he also at the start completely loved. All of a sudden though he won't eat anything unless there is potato or chicken or mince in with it! He also likes a slice of toast and cheese too lol.  ph34r i know it probably was our fault for introducing some human food into his diet. We thought it was due to teething, but all his teeth have fallen out and its still the same scenario. I got some nature diet wet trays and added that in too with the kibble but he didn't really take it either. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could i try maybe mixing some tuna in with the kibble for instance? When there is potato etc he will eat the kibble up too so I'm not sure he is being really fussy or just wants something a little tastier in with his dinner. Or should I maybe try wet trays completely? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I had a similar problem. My boy Archie refused all kibble and also wouldn't eat naturediet.  Eventually I found that Wainwrights wet trays went down a treat. He is now entirely wet fed on the wainrights and we have never looked back. It is available only from Pets at Home but if you don't have one near you then Forthglade food is very similar. I sometimes use that too, just for the flavour variety.

How old is he,Gabby our eight month old recently started to leave some of her meals, like today she never ate much of her breakfast.I just took it away after five minutes and she has eaten all of her tea. They seem to go through a fussy stage when they stop growing.

Perhaps your feeding him to much and hes not hungry  :003:

Funny this morning I decided to give him the nature diet again with a little bit of kibble in with it and put it in the microwave to get the juices going and he ate it all up! So he might just prefer the wetter food which is fine. Just don't want a very fussy dog as it would turn into a disaster when we leave him in the kennels. He is 6 months old just two days ago!!

Remember they have a secondary teething stage (between 6 and 10 months) which is when the molars bed in and this can cause discomfort, some out of sorts behaviour, tummy upsets and a return to chewing - especially of hard things ;)

We have recently changed Nala from Chudleys to Wainwrights after a recommendation on here.  We have been giving it to her with some Chudley's but I am a bit concerned we are not giving her enough.  She is ten months old and it recommends 1 3/4 to 3 trays a day.  We are just giving her 1/2 a tray with a couple of handfuls of Chudley's twice a day.

Can I ask how many trays you give Archie?

Hi. It's a bit confusing because at some point last year they suddenly changed the recommended feeding amount. The ingredients were exactly the same and nothing else looked different but they suddenly increased the amounts to almost double what they had been before. I stuck to the original amounts and all has been fine. Archie has just two thirds of a tray a day. No kibble but he does get several treats. He's a big boy and weighs just under 17kg so according to Wainwrights he should be on one and a quarter trays a day but he's not a particularly active dog on his walks. I tend to go by his shape rather than the recommended amount. If Nala is a good shape where you can feel but not see her ribs then you should be fine. Mums little girl Jade is a bit more active than Archie. Despite weighing just under 10kg she has a whole tray a day. Also with no kibble.
