Food suitable for dog with IBD
« on: January 31, 2014, 09:05:10 PM »
Piper was diagnosed with IBD last year, mainly affecting her stomach and her small intestine. She needs to be on wet food to discourage her to drink (one of her issues is gagging after drinking). She was originally put on Eukanuba Veterinary Dermatosis FP but she wasn't quite 100% right on it. About 3 weeks ago the vet suggested moving her onto Hills Canine d/d skin support Vension flavour but she is loosing weight even though she is eating 2 tins a day (at £4 a day  :o  ) and seems to be constantly hungry.

Has anyone tried anything different for IBD? I have been looking at the Lily's Kitchen Campfire stew, but I am nervous to keep changing her.

May be way off mark here but have you tried her on something as simple as Chappie - probably be shot down in flames for suggesting it but when Bobby (who had giardia as a pup) has a few off days Chappie sorts him right out.

My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dogs think I am.

She was put on chappie when we originally thought that she had pancreatitis and it didn't suit her. I am a fan of Chappie, it can be suitable for some dogs. My youngest girl Vixen is on it, as she is unable to digest anything else

She is, but its dry food and Piper has to be on wet food. The vet is pretty certain that when Piper was drinking in the evening and then gagging and coughing, it was irritating her stomach so she needs to be on wet food to reduce how much she drinks

How about Nature Diet, that is a wet food and certainly helped (and is still helping) Minstrel who had colitis as a puppy. It works out roughly 1.50 a day at the mo as he is still on puppy rations, but this will go down as his feed needs decrease.

Not sure how close the two illnesses are Colitis/IBD - but it may help. Also Wainwrights grain free is another. I think Archie Bean feeds this to her Archie

Minstrel hardly drinks from his bowl at all - as the food contains all the moisture he seems to need. It would probably be the same on Wainwrights or any good quality wet food
Remembering Smudge 23/11/2006 - 3/8/2013, Branston 30/8/14 - 28/10/22, and Minstrel 24/6/13 - 13/8/24 all now at the Bridge.

My cocker Bella has recently been diagnosed with IBD. At the moment she is on the Royal Canin hypoallergenic kibble and wet but the vet hopes we can slowly take her off this is the next 4 weeks. I would also like to use wet food and had looked at lilys kitchen but my dog trainer (used to be a member on here and really knowledgeable with IBD thinks that all the herbs could irritate her tummy). plus she would probably have to have the venison or the goose and I am worried they might be a bit rich for her. I did look on the whichdog food website and it said for dogs on a prescription diet with IBD you need a food that is low in fat and high in fibre, it recommended wainwrights grain free so we might try either the fish or the rabbit as she hasn't had much of either of those proteins as I understand you need to try a novel protein.
