Obsessed with Potato Peelings
« on: February 11, 2014, 09:09:10 PM »
My two cockers, Willow and Bramble, are both obsessed with potato peelings.  To the point that they would happily leave their food and wait for any peelings.  They go mad over the few I give them.  Does anybody else have this with their cockers.  I've never known it before.

I'm rubbish at peeling potatoes so inevitably get more peel in the floor than anywhere else! Hudson likes to snap themup but he will eat anything! I try and beat him to it because I didnt think they are any good for him? But maybe I am thinking of humans and raw potato!?

My dogs are raw fed, but I don't give them raw potato because it's one of those foods that the jury's out on. If you do an internet search you'll find plenty of information (or misinformation) ranging from toxic, to harmless in small quantities providing the peelings aren't green or sprouting.

Potatoes are a member of the Nightshade family, so the leaves and stems of the plants are a definite no, which is why I think peeling that's green or sprouting is also a no for feeding.

But although I choose not to feed it I wouldn't worry if either of mine scavenged an odd bit of peel that I'd dropped (providing it wasn't green or sprouting) because I don't think the occasional small amount would do them any harm.

Thanks for answering.  I have read about raw potatoes being bad for them, but wasn't sure about the few potato peelings every now and again.
