Royal Canin vs Burns or any other suggestions please.
« on: February 14, 2014, 03:46:37 PM »
Hi,

Has anyone got any opinions on Royal Canin Adult Medium Light vs one of the Burns range or any other ideas on which good quality dry dog food to use?...

It has been suggested that Sasha's food could be causing her to scoot a lot...

- She is nearly 8yrs old.
- Just over a year ago she was speyed and had both anal glands removed so she struggles with weight, she is about 12kg. (Her poos are normal and formed).
- She was on Royal Canin Adult Medium Light.

After she was speyed and had her anal glands out we put her on Royal Canin Veterinary Neutered food but she is still scooting and could do with losing some weight.

We have decided to see if it's her food that's causing the scooting. Someone has suggested Burns Weight Control food?

Any ideas anyone?

Thank you.
X

Look at this site which gives details of the best food for your dog.  http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/

I have started Jamie on Orijen puppy food, and when Henry has lost weight - due to his medication - he will be on Orijen Adult food.  Henry was on raw food but it's not convenient when travelling so Orijen is recognised as BARF and he will be having that.

Do you particularly want a "light" food? There is an argument that higher protein foods make for better weight control diets than higher carbohydrate foods. (Can't say whether it's true myself but see the Orijen White Paper on feeding at http://www.orijenpetfoods.co.uk/acatalog/ORIJEN_White_Paper%2809%29.pdf for details.) As long as you feed less and Sasha is happy with that it may work well.

Because of Lenny's allergies and problems with loose poos, I have tried a few of the better kibbles and have found that Taste of the Wild works well, firming up his poos and reducing scooting. Orijen and Acana were also good but TotW shades them on firmness! We are using quite a few treats at the moment to help his behavioural training so he is on just 2x 60g per day of TotW despite being a big dog (he is as big as most springers) and weighs in at over 17kg.
Home of Lenny and the late, great, Dylan.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I'm curious about this. I've seen it mentioned a few times that certain kibbles are BARF diets. I had a look at the Origen website and I see they do a freeze dried version. Is that the one you mean? It looks like their other kibbles are cooked in the normal way. I don't plan on changing from wet food, I'm just curious as I use kibble (Applaws) as training treats and in Archie's treat ball.

Origen and ZiwiPeak both do freeze dried raw meat + vegetables bagged food that apparently retains the nutritional values of the raw ingredients. So they're dried but not cooked or processed in the same way as kibble. They're fed dry in the same way as kibble. I know of a few people who've used ZiwiPeak when they've been camping with their dogs because of the convenience of it but I don't know anyone who uses it every day. I think Origen freeze dried is quite new to the market. Is that the one you're using Robbie?

I have noticed that Acana are offering a "Trial" size 400g buy one get one free, it may help you decide if you wish to try a grain free diet. Never used it myself though I always use raw!

Jamie is on Orijen Puppy.  I don't think it is freeze dried.  I have yet to decide which Orijen Henry will have.  He's losing weigh quite nicely with Hill's Prescription Metabolic Diet, and when he's down to his ideal weight he'll start on Orijen.  Hopefully, his medications will be lowered.

When mine tend to "scoot" I put either a crumbled weetabix of a big handful of shreadies  on top of the biscuit for a couple of days and it solves the problem

Orijen Freeze Dried is very expensive - £27.98 for 454g.  I presume this has to be hydrated, but the information does not say by what ratio.

It looks like a healthy choice for your Cocker but I'd like more information before purchasing it.
