Ideas for Game
« on: February 26, 2014, 04:02:03 PM »
Afternoon All,

I have now had Bella at for 3 weeks (11 weeks old) and all in all she has settled in really well and I couldn't be happier. She's getting good at using the puppy pads and even having the occasional toilet trip in the garden. She obeys the sit and stay command - well until I disappear out of site but then she comes to me which I suppose can be expected at this age.

My only problem is that she likes to nip a lot particularly when she is excited and giddy but  I accept this is normal. I'm assuming that she does then when she's a) bored or b) wanting attention. Does anybody have any good tips/ideas on games I can play with her which don't involve being rough or involving the teeth??

Thanks

Hello!  We've had Mali 4 weeks and she is almost 12 weeks old.  We have the same nipping problem!!! We try to distract her with a toy and she really loves tug of war with one of her soft toys - we've bought a couple of those with rope on.  She's now getting where she will bring the toy to us to let us know she wants to play.  She also loves a ball and we make her sit before we let her have it then throw it for her to retrieve.

I mentioned the nipping to my vet yesterday and he advised a teething kong which we've now bought.  He also recommended that if her mouthing turns to a nip to either distract with the kong or squeal then put her out of the room for a couple of minutes or squeal and turn away from her with arms folded - so that she knows she's been too hard and play stops.  This is what we are trying atm.

I hope that's helped a little!!  We are new to all of this too  :005:

For brain work, Lottie loves playing "Find It".

I use training treats or small cubes of something yummy - throw one piece so she can see it and say "Find It!".  Lots of praise when she does.  Throw another piece further away - repeat.  Hide a piece where she can't see it and repeat - help her to start with, again saying "Find it!" all the time.

Lottie got the idea very quickly - I now shut her out of the room and quickly hide bits of treat around the room and as long as I keep repeating the command, she will carry on searching till she has found them all, nose down, tail wagging madly.

 ;) :D

Quite nice seeing your post, I remember that stage and was worried Charlie would never grow out of it, he soon did and now he's 6 months and we have a whole set of new problems to overcome  >:D I found an antler bone or rope ball really helped with directing nipping. Yelping just exciting Charlie even more!  When he was really teething it was an ice cube or frozen carrot that worked but at 12 weeks its just that they are exploring with there mouths so need redirecting.  This soon gets better though.
