Puppy ears!
« on: February 28, 2014, 02:44:01 PM »
Hi all- Nero is just over 8 weeks and finding the ends of his ears are getting a bit "dirty" due to dipping in his food bowl!
Is there a common way to clean the ear ends or just some warm water and a light sponge?!
Presuming this is the way just checking in not missing a trick!

Most people give them a quick wash with warm water and hibiscrub :) as they get older, if you keep the ears long they'll need doing every two or so days. to keep them cleaner you can invest in a snood which stops them dragging around on walks and when they eat.

you can buy special spaniel food bowls that are narrow and keep the ears out of the food.

We used to put a plastic peg on the ears  :005: that was before we got the spaniel bowls.

They didn't mind it but  Nero might not like it

I've seen people use scrunchies as well to tie the ears back!  :005:

I got some special ear wipes from the pet store which I use to clean the ends of his ears and gently inside, every couple of days.

We used to tuck my cavaliers ears into his collar when he was eating. Murphys ears aren't as long so it hasn't ben a problem so far.

Hair scrunchie here! and if Ella shakes her head and it falls out I just use a baby wipe on any food bits on her ears. ;)

Hi, I use a plastic peg.  Willow looks a me a bit gone out, but it doesn't put her off her food.

This - having a spaniel bowl makes a huge difference for food and for water.

I might look into a bowl- I read somewhere they weren't great for pups as they are too deep and can't get those noses/mouth in there?

We've used spaniel bowls for both food and water since Charlie was 12 weeks, he's never had any problem getting food out, he is a greedy little cocker mind so would get food out of anywhere :)
