8 month old with upset tummy - please advise!!
« on: May 24, 2014, 10:31:05 AM »
Hello everyone, I'm a bit worried because Archie (8 months) has had very runny poo since last night and I've been up with him a couple of times. He is otherwise his normal self but it can't be right - especially as the poo is a bit mucus -y,

A few days I changed to feeding him just once a day, (around 6pm) because he wasn't interested in breakfast - surely this would not have anything to do with it?

He has eaten a lot of plastic lately  (don't ask) but there's no evidence of it coming out the other end.

sorry to be so graphic but I'm just wondering if anyone could give me their ideas on what it might be......

I think a trip to the vet is advisable.  Particularly with it being a Bank Holiday.  Might be nothing to worry about but best to get it checked out.

I agree. If he hadn't eaten the plastic I'd be inclined to think it was just some sort of minor tummy upset (and it probably is) but as he's eaten plastic and it hasn't reappeared I'd be worried. Can you phone your vet and ask for advice ?

I agree. If he has eaten plastic and it has not 'reappeared' you have to go safety first.

I would definitely at least phone your vet for advice - hopefully just an upset tummy, but best check just to be on the safe side. Hope it isn't the plastic and he's back to normal very soon :luv:

Agree with all of the above as well as the chicken and rice.  I do think he is too young to be on one feed only.  Jinley is nearly 3 and still has something for breakfast.  Just try little and often until he is back to normal (after a phone call to the vets)

Update - I have been to the vet and have been given Canikur tablets and some Hills prescription diet i/d and advice to feed him on that, little and often. Unfortunately we couldn't see the actual vet because she'd gone, but they were able to sell this over the counter.
I will see about the one feed a day issue... it's just that it has been working very well for him (unless it's that which has caused the upset tum of course)! He's not that keen on food and never wants to eat it really, especially breakfast.
Regarding the plastic eating, I'm not sure he ate it recently enough for it still to be coming through the other end.... some definitely came through the last time he had a normal poo though.

I also am concerned about the plastic and glad you've been to the vets for some advice, as for the chicken and rice, it has always been my answer, since working for a vet many years ago, he always recommended boiled rice with chicken breast -no skin or boiled rice with steamed white fish no skin for a couple days.

My other cocker was prone to an icky tummy and it helped bring it back under control......but he was a chicken lover and didn't like fish!

Hope all is well really soon with your little one.
Cocker kisses and cuddles just make my day!

You are always with me darlings Jaypup and my precious Oliver you are so missed

thank you ...
would chicken and rice be preferable to giving him the canned food the vet recommended then?

I always keep a tin of Chappie in for upset tums as well.

Are you feeding him his suggested daily intake in the one meal ?

I would try to give more than one meal a day, by splitting it into smaller portions it may be better for his tummy, for his age he needs plenty of energy from his food and the one meal may be too big for his stomach to deal with.

I always have chicken in the freezer and rice in the cupboard just in case, it certainly works out cheaper than most of the food supplied by vets, especially as it hopefully will only be for a couple of days.

Hope Archie feels better soon.

Yes, this is our standby as well. We keep a tin or two in the back of the fridge "just in case"  ;).

You may find that one meal a day could cause some problems especially a bit of morning sickness. A small amount of food or a treat just before bedtime is usually recommended so that they have something to digest overnight.

Have to agree with its.sme, at eight months Archie should really have his daily food allowance split between two meals. Chicken or flaked white fish and rice is one of the staple recovery diets for cockers and, in my opinion, is just as good if not better than many of the rather expensive foods that are available from your vets.

Hope young Archie is soon feeling better and can be persuaded to move away from his plastic diet  ;).

Bob.

well he's in good spirits although has not poo-d today so I don't know whether he's really on the mend or not, time will tell I suppose!
All plastic strictly off limits!
We've been giving him the tinned food the vet gave us, little and often. Perhaps will go back to feeding twice a day once he's fully recovered, although I changed to once a day after taking advice on this very forum. Horses for courses I suppose!

I know what you mean about horses for courses, when I first got my pup I see three vets at our practice and all three gave me different advice >:(

All our dogs are individual and we spend most of our time working out what works for our bundle of fluffy fun.

What works for one will not work for another (annoyingly) :D
