Keyhole vs normal spay

Hi all

Pebbles is now past first season and, as we planned, were about to book her in for spaying.

Then I heard and read about different types of spay....

Needless to say, am now up in the air about which to pick!

So, questions, for those that have had each type;
Keyhole; any vets near Walsall/Wolverhampton that can be recommended?
Keyhole; what sort of price have people had to pay?
Normal; what size scars have your bitches got?
Normal; what sort of price have people paid?
Normal; what was recovery period like (length, issues)

Hi,

We had keyhole for Ellie. They shaved her quite high at both sides and her fur has always been slightly thinner there where it grew back (although I don't think anyone else would notice) I can't see any scars and if I remember rightly it was only 2 tiny stitches. She couldn't sleep when we first brought her home and my oh stayed up with her all night and she couldn't seem to lay down. The next day she was right as rain. As my oh is with her all day we didn't use a lampshade collar until bed time. I don't think she ewould have bothered with her stitches but we used it just in case. I dont remember exact cost but it was a fair bit more than a normal one.

Our vets said they didn't do keyhole surgery as it causes problems if they have a bleed. Unfortunately,  Maddie did have a bleed and they also found her organs were small and not in the right position. So it was just as well she didn't have keyhole. Her cut ended up about three inches in length. Brambles was straight forward and her cut was tiny, less than an inch. Cost was dependent on body weight. Under 10kg was about £129 I think!

my vet's incision is so tiny and he's very good at doing this surgery it would never cross my mind to ask

I would rather my own vets did any surgery like this on my pet unless its something that needs a referral to a vet school

Have had no issues with surgery of this type even though they can happen and I've taken quite a few dogs to my own vet for dog spays as I also have to take fosters there as well (plus other foster carers use my vet too for same op) - our rescue takes most dogs that come in to the rescue for neutering

dogs are sometimes allergic to the internal stitches but that's rare

Had key hole with Honey, it was £280 all in. She didn't need to wear a collar as she didn't even notice that there was anything there!! A little bit groggy and out of it on the day, but the next day you wouldn't know that she had had surgery! Had trouble keeping here calm as recommended by the vet. Would recommend, good luck....
