We've been SO lucky...
« on: October 30, 2014, 10:15:46 AM »
Following my previous posts, we've been SO lucky.  Had to take Mollie back to the vets yesterday and got her blood test results. Her liver is alright but both her kidneys are enlarged and affected. There is nothing that can be done to stop the toxicity, they can only prescribe medicine to support her kidneys. She has finally stopped drinking excessively yesterday (vet extremely pleased to hear this) and this is a good sign. She is happy in herself (although more tired) but will be on the tablets for about 2 months to help the kidneys. She has to go back to the vets in one week to check the levels for her urea. We've been so, so lucky, the vet told me only 2 ibruprofen can be fatal - she had taken 4!!!!! Really thought last Tuesday that she wouldn't be making her 3rd birthday tomorrow.  :'(

What a lucky escape. I know it's been traumatic for all of you and distressing for Mollie, but it could have been so much worse and I'm glad things are now looking a lot more positive.

One of my previous Cockers had a serious kidney infection when he was about 10 months old (the fear initially was FN, but it turned out to be an infection of unknown origin) and it did some damage to his kidneys. But I was told by the vet that in young animals the kidneys are pretty good at being able to do a degree of self repair. Hopefully the same applies to Mollie, especially with the support of medication for the next couple of months, which wasn't available 25 years ago when Sam was ill. He recovered fully and went on to live a normal life with no further kidney problems. I hope the same applies to Mollie :luv:

This post reminds me of when my Lexi spent a night at the vets after finding a partially chewed Ibuprofen tablet when I got back after a night out. She had rifled through my handbag and found it. We had to drive up to Birmingham at two in the morning to an all night vet as I wouldn't leave her at an unattended surgery. I handed this little ball of fluff over (she was only a few months old) and was told to expect a call in the morning to see whether she had survived the night. She was put on a drip and had something to make her sick as well as other treatments. What a long night that was.

Five years on she's hail and hearty but I'll never forget that terrifying night and its made me doubly careful where I keep tablets of any kind now.

I hope your little fluff ball continues to recover fully. Thank goodness for skilled vets!
