Has anyone ever had their dog on this? I'm trying to gather info before I make the decision. Laurie thinks it would benefit Lyla......I'm not so sure. Its the first time I have ever disagreed with her but wanted to do my homework so I can argue my case. Any help appreciated xxx

None of mine have but its currently a consideration for Jacob as his daily mix of tramadol and metacam hasn't been managing his pain as well as before. I would be interested in hearing your decision once you make it  :D

Hi sheryl
My beautiful girl Moss had this with a mix of tramadol. She Woke up one morning in awful pain and could hardly move after hurting her back . We didn't have any concerns over side effects as at the time she was 14 and she was in so much discomfort  that it was a choice of trying the painkiller or have her put to sleep .the medication worked and she was back to herself in a couple of days . She was on the medication 2 weeks then we moved her back to rimadyl ( she was pretty arthritic). Unfortunately  7 months later her kidneys failed and we said our goodbyes .she was 15 by this point , I'll never know whether the medication caused her kidneys to fail or if it was just due to old age .
However the meds did make her more comfortable but I'm not sure what the implications of using them long term is . I hope this helps .

Wow I didn't know dogs could have this. My rheumatologist wanted to put me on this drug but I declined as the side effects were horrid and it's an epilepsy drug. I know dogs react differently to us with drugs but I would try and find as much info as possible. I feel for you because I know you love your baby so much and don't want her in unnecessary pain. :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

That's my problem, she isn't really in pain. Now and again she shoots off the settee like her @rse is on fire. I know it's her bum because that is what she used to do before she had her glands taken out. Laurie thinks with her anal gland op and spinal op sort of in the same area that she has phantom pain. I'm convinced it is from her bum, even if they can find nothing there. To me, the
Gabapentin is a bit like a sledgehammer to crack a nut approach. Thing is, when she is like that, I can give her a dose of Metacam and then she is fine. I know that she can't get an infection there anymore but wondered if there is just some part of the gland that occasionally gives her gyp.

Can people whose dogs have had the anal gland op let me know if they have ever had anything like this, with their dogs swinging round to check out their back end, even after the op?

Kooki took a while to realise that they were not there any more, I likened it to phantom pains that you have with lost limbs etc and tried to distract her when she took one of her 'turns' oddly enough I hadnt realised until I saw your message that she hasnt done it in a few months now but it did take almost a year for it to fizzle out

Not had anything like this with Pearl - she does occasionally make to scoot on the rug in the living room but it's for attention  :shades:
