how much to spay?
« on: November 24, 2014, 11:01:42 AM »
We have just booked our two 3.5 year old girls in for their spay op (is it spay or spey?), its not keyhole just normal surgery and they will have stitches but I think they're dissolvable.  We were given the option of a cone or a t-shirt/babygro so have opted for the babygro.

However I just got a shock when I asked the price.. £220 each! :o Is this the going rate? I had about £150 in my head for some reason  :-\ I want the best for them, and we can walk them to this vet, but am I being stitched up as well (:P) or am I just out of touch??

Quote from my vet for Minstrel's castration was £170 - so I'm guessing a spay would be more.
Remembering Smudge 23/11/2006 - 3/8/2013, Branston 30/8/14 - 28/10/22, and Minstrel 24/6/13 - 13/8/24 all now at the Bridge.

Prices tend to vary hugely by area. For a 10-25kg dog at my vet a normal spay is £260 but I live in Buckinghamshire where everything is expensive.

This is Buckinghamshire too lol (Milton Keynes!), ahh that makes me feel a little better then, my friends vet is £165 but that's in Bedfordshire 30 miles away, at least this one we can walk to and its only round the corner if any issues.

Although I'm feeling guilty already :(

It probably depends too on how much competition the vet practices have. Mine is part of a group that controls other vet practices and in that situation there is not a lot of reason to cut prices.

I had Dolly spayed last Monday and cost was £178 at vet's practice in Livingston.
This was normal not keyhole surgery and included drugs + follow up appointment this Thursday.

I paid £120 for Jinley recently which covered quite a small cut (not keyhole but very close) which had internal stitches only so no need for the cone.  Covered drugs and 3 follow up appointments.  We are in Shropshire, but you dont have to go to your own vet for the op - or get quotes from other practices then ask your own vet to match it.

Depends on the area.

That is about what I paid when Coco was spayed about 8 years ago - I am in Oxon!  ;)

it does go on weight. Gemma (8kg) just cost us £122, (inc operation and 3 check up visits with the   nurse  .  how much are they charging for the baby grow, I would decline and find a baby one (cut tail hole to fit)

just to add our vet is a fully kitted out  hospital so I was pleasantly surprised
Run free and fly high my beautiful Gemma

Hi Kate2. If you get time to read through, the link should take you to the thread I posted in February this year:
http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=109612.0

I felt exactly the same as you and didn't really want to swap vets. In the end we did swap vets and have stayed with them as we have found them to be better; friendlier and the opening times are much better too. Just shows that the most expensive ones are not always the better ones. I wouldn't hesitate to compare prices again, especially as a spay is such a routine operation. Hope you can get it all sorted and at a reasonable cost (especially when there are 2 to pay for) xx
