Jumpy puppies!!
« on: September 26, 2015, 09:00:52 PM »
Hi, looking for a bit of advice on stopping my puppies jumping up when greeting people.  They are both 20 weeks now and after initially being scared and shy of new people they now want to jump all over anyone they meet as well as friends and family members!! They do calm down eventually but I really want them to be calm when greeting people too.  We've been trying to ignore them till they're calm then greeting them - how hard is that!! Lol, any advice would be greatly appreciated. 😕

It's one of the most common problems, often unintentionally made worse when the person who is being jumped on tells the dog off or pushes it away. Sometimes, any attention, even negative attention, can be rewarding to a dog.

The method shown in this link http://www.positivepettraining.co.uk/jumping-up.html can be a good way to train a dog that it doesn't get any attention, praise or reward unless it has all four paws on the ground.

Because you have two same age puppies it will be more difficult to train calm behaviours than just one puppy. You'll need to train them one at a time, away from each other, so they learn to focus on you and not to be too reliant on each other. You'll also need to ensure that everyone in the household and all visitors are on board to do the training and treat the dogs consistently so they learn what's required in the way of polite behaviour :D

Just had a wee look, Elaine, so simple but so effective, we have been treat training them and they are super at walking to heel, sit, stay, watch and recall.  We did train them separately going to separate classes except the last class as the trainer wanted to test them being together and they done really well.  Will try this as we have been telling them down and off.  Thanks so much for your help xx😃

OMG I wish I could get Alfie to walk to heel, I've been trying everything (diffrent collars, leads, treats) he would much rather pull in every direction and sniff!! Hes 5 months and a complete pain in the neck on lead, any tips??

I second the request for tips about walking to heel. Lola is 7 months and she doesn't pull too much but likes to be in front at all times.

At the moment I'm just celebrating the fact she's starting to appreciate naps outside of her playpen. Until about 2 weeks ago when she was up and about she was REALLY up and about. Then one night she jumped on my lap and fell asleep, I don't think I moved for an hour not wanting to ruin the moment. Now she loves an afternoon lap nap, don't worry though she's still bonkers most of the time.

Have you tried a stair gate or a mat that they have to sit on to wait for a reward? Might get them used to the bum on the floor or no attention?

I usually tell people to turn sideways.its very confusing for them as some people will give them lots of fuss when they jump upso its hard.turning sideways without eye contact i find i use myself as well when i am out and dogs come rushing at me.
