Flirt Pole?
« on: May 18, 2016, 07:42:01 AM »
I just came across mention of flirt poles on a Facebook training group, I'd never heard of them before. Do any COLers use one? Henry isn't interested in playing fetch while we are out walking and it would be nice to have something fun to reward him for recall and being with me apart from food. Any thoughts?

Yep I have one which I purchased from Amazon , both my dogs love it ! I did teach take it & leave it when we play in the garden so that they don't destroy it  ;).
I don't take mine on walks as it's quite large & Im sure my neighbours already think I'm a crazy dog lady - you can probably get smaller ones though  :005:

Yes, I haven't seen anyone on our walks with one either! Can I ask what size you got? They seem to come in lots of lengths.

Was brave and googled it  ph34r. What a good idea. OH is now in the workshop making one from some plastic pipe, got to find some cotton cord, and a bundle of old socks should do the trick. Dylan will love it, he loves to chase things but not so,fussed about bringing them back!

I bought one from Amazon, but you can make your own I believe. Maddie hates it but Bramble loves it. Best used in the garden as it does hype them up.
Good for teaching impulse control though

If you pop " flirt pole for dog " into Google there are some good training videos 😉

As Henry isn't interested in retrieving, why not teach him the 'clicker retrieve'. There are some good articles on the Total Gundog site.
It won't be long until Henry is bringing everything back to you

For some reason I can't quite fathom, I've been very resistant to getting a clicker. Maybe now is the time. Thanks for the tip.
