New puppy at doggy day care

The in laws who look after our 3 year old boy Sam when we are at work have just picked up an 8 week old black lab girl who is lovely.there last dog a male lab died aged 15 over a year ago.So far Sam has been the perfect gentleman with her and he seems to realise he needs to be careful and that she is only a pup.I was wondering though as she grows how the dynamic of their relationship will grow.I know every dog is different however I have read that often a female will assume the alpha role in a household even with a full male.I am not worried as I believe that these things naturally work themselves out but was more curious if anyone else has an opinion or experience.thanks

The only experience I have is with two spade bitches I look after for a couple of weeks a year (9yrs and 5yrs).
I have 3 entire males (8yrs, 7yrs and 5.5yrs) and when the girls come to stay, they pretty much rule the roost as soon as they walk in 
They choose where they will sit/sleep and the boys let them, even if its where they would usually sit (there's no aggression or "sulking" they just move out the way and are happy for the girls to do whatever they please)
I am in no doubt that the eldest boy would not be anywhere near as tollerant if a male came in and did the same

I have a 10 year old border terrier cross - Josie & a 2 year old Wcs Ernie . Ernie is very laid back & Josie definitely " wears the trousers " , they get along wonderfully but she did tell Ernie off when he overstepped the boundaries as a puppy  ie  trying to jump on Josies head when she was trying to have a peaceful lie down etc 005: & quite rightly so ! Recently I brought two new beds for them - small size for Josie & medium for Ernie , as he's bigger . Josie sprawls like a princess on the larger bed whilst Ernie squeezes himself on the small bed - I've now had to order another medium bed 
I'm not sure whether Josie is the more assertive dog as she is older & already settled into our family when we got Ernie as a puppy or whether it's due to the fact that she's a bossy little madam & like most males Ernie would just rather settle for an easy life  Ernie doesn't mind being told what to do & him & Josie live in perfect harmony that way 
Anyway I'm sure the dogs will work it out
