Cat jealousy out of the blue
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:00:08 PM »

Our  little cocker Bella is almost 9 months and has  been great of Late but I'm wondering if we have got to the famed teenage phase?  She had suddenly started getting very jealous of the cat!  She got on with the cat from the start,  they are not best buddies but they sniff each other on the way by and sleep happily on adjacent furniture.  The last few weeks Bella jumps up and runs over barking when the cat comes up to me for affection.... And I can't work out what's changed.  Some advice says give her time out so we have started taking her to pen but other sources are saying not to reprimand as it will make the agitation/jealousy worse?!?  Any advice would be a life saver?

Hi. I don't know much about cats and dogs, but it could be adolescence or is she coming into season, as that can affect their moods. It does sound like  guarding of you. My two don't like the other having a cuddle and will guard  so cuddles have to be done carefully! I have managed to get one to lie by my feet or in their bed to help reduce friction. Will she lie by you or stay in her bed? Maybe you could teach this first then make her do it when the cat wants attention.  However, I was always told never to show any anxiety you might be feeling and brush it off as nothing much. Sometimes difficult!
I agree about the confusion of how to deal with growling. We're told not to ignore a growl or then told to put them out for bad behaviour.  I'm never sure what to do!
