Most useful command
« on: June 10, 2016, 10:39:55 AM »
So what's the most useful command you've taught your cocker? For me it's having taught Penny to wee on command. So here on the other side of the world it's freezing tonight, with rain beating down outside. There's no way any of us want to go out. But all I need to say is "outside" and Penny has rushed out, then" do a wee" and she has screeched to a stop on the nearest patch of grass, crouched down in the rain, emptied her bladder, done a poo and then rushed back in. Job done! Back to a warm fire for the rest of the night for both of us!

My brother even managed to teach his dog to only use one small section of his backyard. It meant he didn't have to wander around looking everywhere for dog poo. I'm afraid Penny is not as good as that. But even so, to all new cocker owners, I really recommend the ' do a wee!) command.

Ollie has learned 'shake' for when he comes out of water.  When we wave poo bags at him he knows he is expected to poo.'sing' is the funniest one as that is his command to howl like a wolf! Dog's Trust teach a good one - 'flat' - which is a command to lie quietly on their side so their bodies can be examined.

Most useful so far has been: 'go to your mat'. If he's being a pest or over-excited, I tell him to go to his mat, lie down and stay until I say 'okay'. I toss him treats as he's lying there and usually he doesn't budge, and is also calmer when he does get up. Invaluable and sanity-saving command when they are young and pesky!

again here " go wee" and "go pooh".
The best one is , not a spoken command but  a signal  she has learnt. When I go to the key draw she sits and waits. If I pick up the car keys , no response. If I pick up my bunch of keys  she  goes  into a panic to find a toy and then meets me at the back door to go outside with me  :dunno: .

Definitely 'wees!' and 'toilet!'   So useful prior to going visiting...
Unfortunately I neglected to add hand signals to the verbal commands, so we've lost them, as Millie is deaf now...

Just wondering what hand signal you'd give for "toilet" and "wee wee"  :005: I'm guessing you could have a lot of fun with that one!  :lol2:

Not at all useful but one I like best: after he has his bedtime biscuit I stick my head my head in the crate and say 'where's my kiss' and he licks my nose.  :luv:

Very impressive. I've never needed to train a wee/poo on command for some reason! Archie's most useful command is "fetch it for a biscuit". It's the phrase that will immediately diffuse a (thankfully now incredibly rare) guarding situation. His whole demeanour changes with those 5 words. Evil snarly, growly, horrible Mr Archer turns to happy, waggly, take it Mummy, it's yours Archie!

I think the most useful command I've taught the boys is "wait" It stops them trying to dive in/out as soon as the door's open, and they get told "wait" as their food is being put down before being told to    " take it". Hugo still gets very excited and squeaky, chirping like a bird  :005: :luv: at mealtimes but the commands calm him down.

" Here " which means come away from whatever you're doing & walk by my side until I say " off you go " , very useful for passing other dogs & their owners , children , horse & riders , cyclists , not going straight in water so I can check it's safe , not eating  dead animals & - not eating horse poo ... The list is endless  :005:
I live in the countryside by the way !!

We use .........stay close,   o.k. for you can now go,   wait,   be clean for a poo & do a wee wee.    Kez also doesn't like the rain & usually performs quickly & back inside.

fetch, Bailey will go to the garden and fetch ALL of the teddy bears that Milo has left out and if I am cold at night I tell him fetch my throw from the other sofa and he will bring it to me . He will fetch my shoes for me, he would have made a fantastic assist dog  :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:
