Toileting Tips

Right guys, share you puppy toileting tips. It's still very early days but we don't feel to be making much progress with what we are doing. Like I said, very early days so we aren't concerned but we are interested in what worked for you?

This worked for us:
No puppy pads, no area indoors where it was suitable to toilet.

Taken outside every time he woke up, before naps, before food, after food, before playing, after playing, or every twenty-thirty minutes if none of those things have occurred!

Wait for a pee or poo. Wait. And... wait. At least 10 minutes. When he peed, we quietly chanted his cue word. Done just when he was in the action of peeing. Quiet praise and back indoors or play outside. No treat rewards. The relief of going should be reward enough.

Accidents never commented on (although I did sigh inside!). Whip him out if mid-pee, just so he gets the idea. Otherwise clean it up ASAP with biological washing liquid or a specialist puppy pee spray.

We had Henry clean in the house within a few weeks, but it took a few more weeks after that before he would actively ask to go out. It's all about making sure he's outdoors at times when he might need to go.

Well it does take a while til they a) understand what they're supposed to do and b) can control what they're doing. What have you been doing so far? If I had to summarise I'd say:
Take the puppy outside regularly, and always after a sleep, a meal or after playing.
When he performs, say "wee wee" or "hurry up" or whatever and then praise profusely when he does.
Any accidents in the house should be cleaned up immediately without comment or scolding and the spot washed so there's no more smell, otherwise they'll gomback to that spot again.( you can get smell neutralising sprays or vinegar will also work).
If you catch him in the act, scoop him up and take him to his assigned place outside but without comment.
Ignore any suggestions of rubbing their noses into their mess or similar, it doesn't work and is cruel.
Can't think of anything else except, stay calm and be patient - they all get there in the end, some take longer than others but even after they've got it, expect little accidents now and again, especially if they're a bit excited or have had their injections etc.
BEst of luck!
