starting raw but need to go slow
« on: July 30, 2016, 03:53:12 PM »
I cook for my dog at the moment but my  vet has recommended that I try raw to help with his pancreatitis. Although I am very keen to do this I just know I will have to start very slowly with him. I have ordered low fat pre-made rabbit from Nutriment  but I was wandering if it would be ok to give his cooked meal and then give  a small amount of raw and build up slowly.

Hi Nutriment and Natural Instinct both make a frozen raw food suitable for dogs with pancreatitis. I think the NI is slightly lower at about 4.8.
There are some good FB groups that might help with advise. Rawfeeding Rebels and Raw Feeding UK.

Thanks Jessie. The only problem with the  ones for pancreatitis is they contain chicken which my dog has a problem with (at least cooked chicken). He also can not tolerate beef or lamb. I have just asked to join rawfeeding rebels I think I will join the other one as well.

You can ring Nutriment and ask them for advice, they are very helpful.

Nature's Menu also do a veg and fruit mix in frozen nuggets that you can add to your own raw meat.

A vet that suggested Raw feeding !

Often vets are not fans, so it's great to hear that some vets out there can see the benefits .

I wouldn't mix raw and cooked meats in the same meal - appreciate your don't want to bring on a pancreatitis attack but the two will take different times to digest which can cause issues with wind and discomfort for your dog.

Most of the pre mix raw foods contain all the nutrients and bone your dog needs.  We are finding that ours get hungry on Natural Instinct so bulk out with veg - today they've had carrot, Apple, pear, kale and sweet potato with NI beef.

If you're bulking with vegetables, its best to either cook them or, if you're feeding raw, liquidize them. Dogs digestive systems can't break down the cells so not only do they not benefit from the nutritonal value, the vegetables will just pass through and come out like they went in and can also make them a bit "windy"! ;)
Humphrey loves raw beetroot and I also tried pumpkin this week, as well as those suggested by Pearly (although I'm not sure about sweet potato, shouldn't that always be cooked?)
