Words of wisdom
« on: July 30, 2016, 10:38:46 PM »
Humphrey's Gotcha Day is fast approaching its first anniversary and reading posts from new cocker mums and dads, I'm reminded of some of the moments of desperation I experienced in those first weeks and months. In a sentence, what's the best advice you'd give to console those suffering from Puppy Blues?

'Don't react, stay calm and go at your dog's pace' . Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Don't compare. Your pup is unique and he/she will "get it" at their own pace.

They will always be your Puppy, they will always surprise you and they WILL understand you someday but will not always listen  :005:

I now look back and remember the Puppy stages with a big smile, it was all soooo worth it  :luv: :luv: :luv:

Give the a safe place that's theirs

Make sure they have a routine which is the same seven days a week - pups don't understand it's the weekend!

Let em sleep they need 18-20 hours a day...

Don't encourage running around with children - whilst it's fun as a pup it's not good as a fully grown up dog and how does your dog know the difference!

Start basic training from the day they come home - sit/stay before feeding

At 10 months old your dogs hearing will be developing/changing, whatever commands and good behaviour you thought you had in place, go back to basics as its all about to go to pot  ;)

Squeezy cheese is a miracle product

Buy a Coatking (20 medium) a Matt splitter, a Matt buster and find a good groomer

Door discipline - humans before dogs, always!  Invaluable when at a gate out walking and you can't see what's the other side.....same for crossing roads
