Whining..

 4 days ago I rehoused a 5 year old cocker, part show/working. Currently in Norfolk for a long weekend with my wife and Westie. If I or my wife leave him for a second he constantly whines until she or I return. Anyone know the reason and what to do? On the positive he's worn us out racing around the large sandy beaches..

Work him hard and wear him out. Hiding and finding is good for this and you can do it indoors.

Its my guess he's just feeling a bit insecure. If you've only had him 4 days and then taken him away, then he's had a lot of upheaval in a very short time, getting used to you, your other dog and two new homes etc. How can he know you're going to come back? I'd try and establish some routine for him now so he can build up some trust and I'm sure he'll settle down before long.

This is classic Separation Anxiety - which is so common you can Goggle it for thousands of hits. You will find numerous ways of gradually reducing the whining but the important word here  is 'anxiety'. This dog has had a major life change- to you it's a lovely new home and nice owners. To him it's a kidnapping with captors he's trying to get a relationship with.  Once you see it his way you'll find it easier to cope with. And I'm sure you'll find a behavioural change method that works for you. Read up- not every one works for every dog. When we rehome dogs from rescue it's the thing we give the pep-tal;k about most often.

But really patience and understanding is the place to start. Good luck.
