burying bones!
« on: August 14, 2016, 08:02:19 PM »
I gave Blue a nice juicy raw meaty bone today - his first.
He picked it up, and trotted to the door with it, where he whined piteously to be let out.  I opened the door to see what he would do.  He took his bone and immediately dug a big hole under a bush in which to bury it!
Isn't it fascinating that this instinct is so strong, even in such a young dog?
Last week I gave him a frozen carrot to chew on, as he's been losing his baby teeth.  He ate half, and buried the rest under a tree.  The following day, I watched him dig up the remains and re-inter it elsewhere in the garden.  On the third day, he dug up the remaining mouthful of orange sludge and buried it for the final time in another part of the garden.  I find him a constant source of fascination and entertainment!

We have no tubs left in the garden that havent had something of some description buried and rotting - love their little traits.

Yes, from the little I've seen I find the instincts intriguing.  Ollie also had the urge to hide and bury from a young age, and although not allowed outside with desired items would rhythmically move his paws in a futile burying motion on the sofas with treasured items in his mouth. His instinct to guard was present from day 1 too, but it is not a very welcome one. The instinct to cock a leg at a certain age, the instinct or behaviour of wagging his tail in a very defined manner when he is scent working.  Even more intriguing I find is the instinct he seems to have for quartering and not going beyond a certain distance from us, and even stranger, when I short whistle he changes direction when he is searching! Now we never taught him any of this, and we have owned him from the age of 8 weeks so he can not have learned it so I find it absoluely bizarre - but when I looked it up I found out that this is a signal that some working dogs are trained to.  He seems to have been born with the knowledge or instinct that he should change direction upon a short whistle (and come to a long whistle.)

Zak does the rapid digging motion on the kitchen floor and in his basket too. Nice to know it's a cocker thing and he's not going mad lol.

I too found it endearing and intriguing when one of my dogs used to bury bones. However it wasn't so endearing when she dug it up and proudly carried it into the kitchen with the bone and her ears dripping with maggots  :020:

Dexter also hides things in the house, we give him some dried tripe and he will hide down the side of furniture or behind the sofa. If you have never smelt dried tripe then you will not know how bad it is to be sitting there and start to get the smell drift up to you. They are funny little creature but also very endearing.
