Puppy 'digging' in her water bowl. Any advice?
« on: August 19, 2016, 05:32:30 PM »
Hi folks,

First post on here but I've been getting lots of advice from you already by reading the other threads.  Anyway, I wondered if any of you could had advice for how to deal with a puppy (18 weeks) who loves to dig in her water bowl.  Actually it's any water bowl so if we go somewhere and water is provided for dogs she'll paw at that too.

Initially I thought it was because she was warm and it cooled her down but she does it when it's not particularly hot.  Then I thought it was because she saw her own, or some other, reflection in the steel but as she does it on non steel bowls I'm not sure if that's the case and she doesn't do it in her food bowl, only the water.  The bowls she has are quite big so although they're spaniel bowls I think they're more suited to an adult dog as her ears are always trailing in the water.  Perhaps the size is a problem and I need to change bowls, maybe to something like thishttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Fed-N-Watered-Spaniel-Bowl/dp/B007MU4N4K  Has anyone used these bowls, would you recommend them?  If not do you have any other bowl you'd recommend?

If you think it's some other cause and have any ideas for stopping her i'd be grateful.  I'm totally OCD and think I've adapted quite well as puppy mess in the Summer is no different to the kids in and out trailing grass cuttings with them but pawing in her bowl, shooting outside and bounding around in the dust so she is now a walking mud monster then darting back into the house to spread the love is beginning to grow tiresome  :o

Many thanks

Ahh!! You have a water baby. Cockers do many things that cannot be explained and that is part of their charm. You could try a smaller bowl or even one of the electronic fountains. We have a fountain for our cats and they are really good, although the dog likes to paw at the water that trickles down.

Henry has always had a bowl that clamps on to the side of his crate at just the right height for him to dip his head into. So no pawing or knocking it over. Might help keep your kitchen floor a bit cleaner!

Hi & welcome to COL

Lol Reese does this with any water not just his bowl, he just likes to try to catch the splashes!  :005: I bought him a paddling pool for outside which he loves and I now seem to have a floor inside that stays dry!  :D

Pics of the little water baby always welcome.

Bet your floor is spotless  :005:  You could get a Road Refresher bowl

They do work, and a paddling pool is a must!

Bit like kids jumping in puddles, but get them near a bath  :lol2:

It's a great game, I'm afraid Cockers and water are made for one another.

I suggest a Chow Bella cocker bowl. It's the best investment I ever made.

ah LOL - should laugh really but my 11 year old cocker is notorious for doing this (she once swamped the vet waiting room before I could stop her)

I regularly come home to a flooded floor - none of my other dogs (spanielXs do it and neither did my blue roan show types)
