Some of you might remember me posting about my Cocker Spaniel, Lilith (Lili) back in November, who was rushed into surgery with a spinal problem that almost cost her the use of her back end. She was only given a sixty percent chance of a full recovery but she bounced back so well it was astounding.
We were due to take her for her twelve week check-up with the ortho surgeon this week, but she came down with Pyometra. Luckily it was the open kind, and they operated on her within twenty four hours of diagnosis (thank God for watching Yorkshire Vet, otherwise I would have never known about the condition to ask the vets to check) The spay went well despite the Pyometra, and she was allowed to go home shortly after surgery on Tuesday.
She'd been very quiet since we bought her home, she hadn't bothered with the wound at all and barely moved around, but this morning she seemed to brighten up quite a lot. She was rolling onto her back and "washing her face" when I saw something seeping from her wound.
Luckily she had an appointment for this morning already for her post-op check, and we got her back to the vets and they took a look and they can't tell if it's coming from her wound or if it's something internal. They've flushed the wound twice today so far and we're back in the morning for them to do it again, and the vet has warned that they may need to do surgery again to go in and try to clear the infection out and obviously there's no guarantees that's going to get things under control either.
I'm absolutely terrified that we're going to lose her because of this.
I know it's my own stupid fault that she's in this situation, for not having her spayed younger and I also think that being allowed to do hydrotherapy while having a season probably didn't help. I don't know how her wound has got infected because we've been keeping her confined to a pen to rest with clean towels and bedding and she hadn't bothered with her belly at all until she started sniffing it this morning. Plus it'd barely been forty-eight hours since surgery when the infections signs showed up. The reason we didn't spay her sooner was partly because we considered breeding from her because she's such a lovely dog, and also because I was absolutely terrified of something like this happening to her.
She's beaten the odds with her recovery from her spinal surgery and now she's essentially fighting for her life again. I can't believe so much can happen to such a sweet little dog who has never done a thing wrong in her life.
If you can, please say a prayer for her to beat this infection. After going through so much to get back on all fours, it's so horribly cruel for this to have happened to her and I feel like we may have run out of luck now. I'm so afraid for her.
